Scottish independence: Jim Sillars warns of 'day of reckoning'

A former deputy leader of the SNP has warned "scaremongering" business leaders they face a "day of reckoning" if Scotland votes for independence.

Jim Sillars accused some of "subverting Scotland's democratic process" and called for oil firm BP to be nationalised after independence.

A number of banks and retail figures have made high-profile interventions in recent days.

The pro-UK campaign claimed the 'Yes' campaign's "mask had slipped".

Mr Sillars appeared beside Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond and his deputy Nicola Sturgeon at a pro-independence event earlier this week.

The two men are said to have fallen out 20 years ago, with Mr Sillars recently describing Mr Salmond's plans for a currency union after independence as "stupidity on stilts".

'Lies and distortions'

Speaking on the campaign trail in Edinburgh's Wester Hailes area from his Margo Mobile, named in memory of his late wife, Margo MacDonald MSP, Mr Sillars said oil giant BP would face nationalisation in an independent Scotland.

He said: "This referendum is about power, and when we get a 'Yes' majority we will use that power for a day of reckoning with BP and the banks.

"The heads of these companies are rich men, in cahoots with a rich English Tory Prime Minister, to keep Scotland's poor poorer through lies and distortions. The power they have now to subvert our democracy will come to an end with a 'Yes'.

"BP, in an independent Scotland, will need to learn the meaning of nationalisation, in part or in whole, as it has in other countries who have not been as soft as we have been forced to be.

"As for the bankers: your casino days, rescued by socialisation of your liabilities while you waltz off with the profits, will be over."

Mr Sillars added: "What kind of people do these companies think we are? They will find out."

'Fear and intimidation'

His comments were seized on as "threats" by campaigners for a "No" vote.

Speaking on behalf of the Better Together campaign, Labour MP Ian Davidson said: "The 'Yes' campaign's mask slipped today as Jim Sillars revealed their message for the final week of this campaign - vote 'Yes' or else.

"His words are a clear threat to anyone who points out the true costs of separation to the people of Scotland.

"The 'Yes' campaign has been a campaign of fear and intimidation from the start. Many people have been silenced. Now those who put their head above the parapet get pot shots from desperate nationalists."

Mr Davidson added: "We have seen the 'Yes' campaign's thugs on the street - now we see their thugs with microphones and press releases.

"Sillars stood shoulder to shoulder with Alex Salmond this week claiming to be positive. Now we see the real face of nationalism in all its ugliness."

A spokesman for the pro-independence Yes Scotland campaign said: "Jim is a passionate campaigner who is carrying on the work of his late wife Margo MacDonald, who dedicated her political life to achieving an independent Scotland and a fairer society.

"The current Scottish government's proposals for an independent Scotland are set out in great detail in the White Paper - including the job-creating powers Scotland so badly needs - and that is what people are voting for.

"In each and every election to an independent parliament, parties and individuals can put forward a manifesto of their choosing and the people will decide."

Ian Davidson MP. Odious scumbag.

On 25 October 2011 it emerged that Clerks appointed to the Scottish Affairs Select Committee had raised concerns with the Clerk of Committees, the most senior official responsible for House of Commons Select Committees, alleging that Ian Davidson had threatened to inflict "a doing" upon fellow committee member Eilidh Whiteford, in the event that details of the committee's discussions during a private session were leaked to the media. Following the allegations Dr Whiteford withdrew from the committee and a formal complaint was made by the SNP Parliamentary Leader, Angus Robertson, to the Speaker of the House.[8]

In September 2013, Davidson caused anger after he compared the independence referendum in Scotland to a war. He made claims that victory was a certainty for the No Campaign, which supports British Unionism, and suggested "wounded" independence supporters should be bayonetted after losing. The remark bore reference to the killing of wounded Scottish Jacobite supporters after the Battle of Culloden. Mr Davidson, a strong anti-independence campaigner, refused to apologise for the comment.[17] A keen shooting enthusiast, the Labour MP also once commented that "Come the revolution, riflemen will be required."

As I have said a zillion times, well twice I think, anyone who puts finance at the top of their agenda in an Independence debate is a fool.

The shops are showing they don't give a f*** about the issues of Independence, just about money.

So should the Scots go their own way, I wish them well, and hope they remember the shops that tried it on.

I wouldn't trust Salmond, even if I was hanging over the end of a cliff and he offered me his arm to pull me back up.

Just goes to show what a spiteful and bullying bunch they are, these are the type people who would run Scotland if they get their way.

It's good that the world and Scottish Voters sees them for what they really are before the Vote, then we can stop them before they turn Scotland into a politically petty and toxic nation and alienate all international business's from wanting to invest here.

Bloody bullies..pure and simple.

Jim Sillars and his cronies should be ashamed of themselves.

I think the banks should have a day of reckoning - I think the oil companies should pay towards damage to the environment - its not as if either aren't short of cash.

But I also think if the Scottish Government bring in a lower corporation tax than the rest of the UK has, then Scottish goods should be taxed by the same amount........although lower levels of the tax in certain regions of the UK would be of benefit - encouraging employment - so I see where the SNP are coming from - perhaps the UK government should take note.

But it's OK for Number 10 to use their big business friends to lie to, bully and intimidate the Scottish electorate? #-o

They are doing no such thing, they are stating the blindingly obvious.

You YES types think the worlds going to come flooding to your door, It wont, your going to drive any right thinking corporation away and out of Scotland forever and along with them will go the Jobs they created. Big and small companies, more so the international ones want stability and wee Eck and his Henchmen offer about as much stability as a boneless Chicken.

How you lot think becoming ever more Insular in a world dominated by Global business and international exports is going to make us a success is beyond me..or indeed anyone with half a braincell, Wee Eck might have convinced the terminally unemployed, the workshy and a few others of minimal thought ability, but he won't full the Majority of Scots.

So just how badly you YES types take defeat on Friday morning should be Interesting to see, You'll never get another bite at the cherry simply because you would'nt give us an "opt back in" referendum if the boot were on the other foot.

And you will continue to delude yourself that your right wing views are shared by the majority of Scots

In reality, your kind are the real minority here and by some considerable distance :D
