Birmingham minicab driver invented American pal in bid to to avoid speeding rap

Nigel Taylor jailed for four months after he claimed he was not at wheel of minicab when vehicle captured travelling at 39mph in 30mph zone

A Birmingham minicab driver has been jailed for falsely claiming an American pal was at the wheel when his minicab was caught on camera speeding.

Minicab driver Nigel Taylor, of Sherbourne Grove in Birmingham, claimed he was asleep at home when his private hire vehicle was flashed by a speed camera in Pershore Road in August 2012 - and that a friend from Los Angeles had used the car without his permission.

An initial prosecution was abandoned but a further investigation and records check showed Taylor was working at the time of the speeding offence - and had invented the story as he already had seven points on his licence.

He was interviewed and admitted driving the vehicle at the time and was charged with perverting the course of justice after refusing a fixed-penalty ticket.

Taylor was jailed for four months at Birmingham Crown Court and ordered to pay £580 costs.

PC Steve Jevons, of the West Midlands Police Camera Enforcement Unit, said: “He was caught driving 39mph in a 30 mph zone - but rather than accept responsibility he tried pinning the blame on a 52-year-old female friend visiting him from Los Angeles. Letters were sent to the ‘friend’ in America but there was no response.

“It’s strongly suspected no such person exits.

“When Taylor was interviewed he was offered a £90 fixed penalty for wasting police time and making a false statement but refused this and doggedly chose to go before the courts.

“This sentencing sends a strong message to anyone who is thinking about lying if sent a notice of intended prosecution.”

Yes but his missus grassed him up didn't she?

We had a driver who was caught by a speed camera, he got his missus to send her licence off thinking she can have the points. They sent him a letter back with a photo asking him if he'd like to reconsider who was driving the car at the time? Attached was the photo which clearly shows him at the wheel.

Very generous of them to offer him the chance to come clean. If id been the clerk i would have been tempted to say "Sir, your misses looks like a dog!"

There are f***wits, and then there are serious f***wits, and then you have the person who has just been jailed.

Maybe he didn't want the points on his license due to him losing his job.
