I thought that I had an engine overheating problem, only to find (thank goodness), that my temperature gauge even before starting the engine goes straight to around the 80 degree ish mark.

Does anyone know of the cause Or cure.....pleeeeze ?

I would have thought that it would be the temperature sensor. or if someone has taken the clocks apart, they could have put the needle in the wrong place. (done that myself before.)

the wire to the sender, if it touches "earth" (any part of the car) will result in the gauge going to maximum (the sender is a resistor varying the connection with the temperature) so, either your wire is shorting to earth (test by removing it off the sender, if it isnt touching earth or the sender the temperature gauge shouldnt move, if it does you have a short to earth, if it doesnt then your sender is buggered

Something (not sure what) has been happening to the cab for the last week or two! 1) If I keep my foot on the brake whilst stopped a constant low level buzzing comes through the intercom system 2) A low level buzzing in general coming through the intercom whilst switched on and travelling 3)The radio (music etc) seems to be picking up interference/losing the signal more than usual 4) Once or twice the headlights have gone off and back on when I have used the signal stalk, and last but not least the headlights have not come on immediately - but a split second or two later when switched on.

My first thoughts re the buzzing and the cab radio (music) were that a suppressor had come off/broken/loose. It would appear to be a bit more than that.

if your not mechanically minded you need a garage

basically it needs a health check - is the voltage good, is the alternator good, is the battery good...it needs a voltmeter, maybe a battery drop tester, then the earth continuity

It did not seem obviously linked at the time. My original post was something that bothered me.....the other stuff was sort of there A bit like Ummm.....not really important I will look at that some other time Tbh I thought re the buzzing/interference that a suppressor had detached/come loose.

The easy way to check the earth straps is to get a jump lead attach it to anything metal on the engine and the other end to the body of the cab, then start it up and check all the things you mentioned if it cures it get a new earth strap

Cheers Skippy it worked a treat, got a guy coming out Monday to check it out. At least it points me in the right direction in not getting turned over re costs....Thank you along with Wanna & Mr Trevor.

Go to any motor factors or Halfords buy a longish battery earth lead, (work out a rough measurement)
Get the right sized spanner, undo a nut on the engine, slide the wire end on, put nut back on, then do the same on the earth of the battery get some insulating tape and fix the middle of the lead to anything, should take no more than 10 mins.
I had a cavalier that I did this with after it refused to start due to the braided earth lead corroding

A good idea. On some new cars the lead is made of quite thin wire (probably to save money) and adding another wire helps. On my old fairway I rigged up a second lead as trying to find anywhere that isn't rusted to provide a good sound earth becomes harder by the week.
