Radio 4, which gets turned off when somebody gets in because it's impossible to talk with talking in the background.

I thought you didn't pay to listen to Commercial Radio Stations because the adverts paid the PRS society?

That must be the same logic that says you don't need a tv license if you only watch ITV.

I don't know, a mate of mine is a DJ at a Commercial Radio Station in Mansfield, he told me the above.

Radio 1 have to pay something like 2p for every chart and ex chart song played.

I think you missed the point. Some people think that if they only watch commercial television, they don't need a TV licence, but they do because it is a TV receiver. So some people would think that they don't need a PRS licence if they only listen to commercial radio.

You Don't need a TV licence if you only watch Catch up's or Replays, but your TV would have to be modified to stop it from receiving live broadcasts.

That's why you can watch BBC I-player catch ups etc without licensing your PC as you would a TV.

I always understood that it's the ability to receive BBC programmes that the licence was for, if that is the case then you do need a licence for your pc

I understand taxis need to have a PRS licence and a PPL licence if playing music from the radio whilst passengers are onboard.

The PRS website says it's about £33 for their licence in a taxi up to 9 passengers

The PPL website only gives a price of about £112 for buses and coaches, no mention of taxis.

Does anyone know the current cost of PPL for an 8 passenger seater taxi. 9 inc driver.

Thank you

If the information you have is correct then it makes sense to pay £33 rather than £112. It's hardly going to break the bank and if it brings in considerable work then it's worth it, if it's just for one then it isn't, unless that one job is worth a considerable amount of money.

Wrong, I thought that as well..but It's the receiver that's licensed not the BBC, they just rob the pot.

You would need both. And I think there is another one as well. Once you are on the system for one licence, the rest will follow.

Ah yes, it pays to read and not scan  Well it would have to justify obtaining the licence, but, if that is the case then so be it :D

Tell me, has anyone in all their years in the trade ever heard of a single taxi driver being fined or prosecuted for not having a licence for their radio
If one was needed, or it is a big issue then the PRS/PPL people would only have to go to any rank in the country and start handing out fines, they'd make a bloomin fortune 'cos I bet there isn't a single hackney or PH in the country that has a licence (except perhaps ones who run a 'disco bus' or similar vehicle that provides music as part of their business)

Thanks to all who have chipped in, but I still don't have the answer I wanted.

The question was how much a ppl licence would be for an 8 seat taxi.

Presumably nobody here has got one, hence they can't tell me.

I phoned ppl and they said I don't need one for 8 seater. I have since emailed them to confirm that and got no reply.

As to the point of taxi's getting away with it .... the difference here is that I intend to advertise the tours and include that a sound track will be played. So although normally I wouldn't bother too much about these things I think if your going to have an online or any other advertising campaign which states you are going to be playing music then I think it would be a good idea to be properly licenced. Thats just me though.
