Why the patent? Patenting Ebola seems as odd as trying to patent cancer or diabetes. Why would a government organization claim to have “invented” this infectious disease and then claim a monopoly over its exploitation for commercial use?

Does the CDC hope to collect a royalty on Ebola vaccines? Is it looking to “invent” more variants and patent those too?

It's complicated so I'll try and keep it short and simple;

CDC have NOT invented ebola, they have identified a strain similar to a human variant which can be used to detect antibodies in infected humans. It is this detection method that they have patented, however hEbola is mentioned in the patent as it is an essential part of the detection process.

The reason for the patent is so that all research gets centralised to the CDC, and maybe they make some money from it.

There are thousands of similar patents where diseases are used to synthesise antibodies and vaccines for research and treatment.

The simplest comparison is the annual flu jab, each year drug companies use the flu virus to create a vaccine - and each of these has a patent.
