Hey everyone i've managed to save around £6500 i was looking at buying a used car for private hire, the one i had my eye on was a Ford Mondeo 1.6 TDCi Eco Edge 5dr [Start Stop] 2011 it has 70.000 miles and is the only one that fits for private hire around my price limit. The other option i have is a Seat Toledo brand new for £12500 with a local taxi centre and i would put down the £6000 and pay the rest up with finance.

Having spoke to the salesmen he told me that they are able to sell the cars cheaper to only taxi drivers and the normal retail would be around £17000 and with it i will get 2 years warranty... and from what i've heard the new Seat Toledo is very economical... but a part of me thinks the mondeo looks in fantastic shape and 70000 miles aint a whole lot ?

Any thoughts... first time car buyer... been renting taxi since i passed my driving test 6 years ago and before i started in the taxis had my uncles old car for a year.

thanks.

Don't go to a main stealer. Auto Trader is your best friend.

why is that ? I always thought that although you will pay a bit more from a dealer that the car will have been inspected and be fixed up for selling and there is usually a small warranty of a month or so ? and buying off some guy on autotrader will be cheaper but is risky as you don't know what could be ready to go when you drive it away ?

If you rent a base car they have a vested interest in you taking enough to pay your rent, if you arent renting a car, just a PDA you will probably get less work

so youve been renting a car and renting a radio, just adding fuel

are you SURE youd be better off owning a car?

£210 for car £115 for radio and fuel is a lot to make in one week though ? and that is the going price in my area... give or take a fiver and at the end of the day it is never my car..... i thought owning my own car i wouldn't need to work as long hours and as many days and it would be my car at the end of the day.

Go for the Mondeo.

The stop start doesn't work if your seat beat isn't in, which is a blessing.

Used all the way, save yourself a few grand and go to Auto Trader. What sort of motor do you want? You can get them from traders on Auto Trader with a FSH and warranty.

You could sell him your car. You don't need it any more.

Hey Nidge, im not really fussed our local council has a no older than 6 years rule so something with 2-3 use, diesel, big enough for a taxi i see a lot of guys using 4 door fiesta like cars but im a big guy and i'd hate to have to turn down a job because the car couldnt fit their luggage etc...

So yeah under 3-4 years old, good reliability and hopefully not needing any work for a good while, economical.... i have never bought a car so it's all new to me.

when i select trader all the cars that appear are dealerships like arnold clark etc... am i missing something ?

Purchase :- deposit and £300 a month
Insurance:- £2400 (£200 a month)
Servicing say:- £1000 a year
Road tax:- upto £220 a year
Tyres:- £200 a year
Council plates:- £200
Meter (hack) :- £200

Do the maths before committing to a purchase

none of the above include major breakdown costs like a flywheel, clutch, injectors, etc

okay when i add that up it works out roughly the same, but i also have a car bought and paid for... that i will make some of that money back when i trade in ?

Now i have 6 grand so say i was to continue renting to get the full buying price and buy the car brand new......... i would then have no rental for the 3-4 years i have the car and with the other totals added up i would be saving 4000 pounds as the total for renting a car all year round is around 8000 pounds with some major breakdowns.... i would still be profiting year by year and again the car would be worth money on trade in ? no ?

What sort of mileage do you think the car will have when you are ready to trade it in? It will be worth far less than you think it will be worth.
