i thought owning my own car i wouldn't need to work as long hours and as many days and it would be my car at the end of the day.

Purchase :- deposit and £300 a month
Insurance:- £2400 (£200 a month)
Servicing say:- £1000 a year
Road tax:- upto £220 a year
Tyres:- £200 a year
Council plates:- £200
Meter (hack) :- £200

Do the maths before committing to a purchase

none of the above include major breakdown costs like a flywheel, clutch, injectors, etc

okay when i add that up it works out roughly the same, but i also have a car bought and paid for... that i will make some of that money back when i trade in ?

Now i have 6 grand so say i was to continue renting to get the full buying price and buy the car brand new......... i would then have no rental for the 3-4 years i have the car and with the other totals added up i would be saving 4000 pounds as the total for renting a car all year round is around 8000 pounds with some major breakdowns.... i would still be profiting year by year and again the car would be worth money on trade in ? no ?

As soon as you put a plate on it it's more or less worthless.

Used all the way, save yourself a few grand and go to Auto Trader. What sort of motor do you want? You can get them from traders on Auto Trader with a FSH and warranty.

Hey Nidge, im not really fussed our local council has a no older than 6 years rule so something with 2-3 use, diesel, big enough for a taxi i see a lot of guys using 4 door fiesta like cars but im a big guy and i'd hate to have to turn down a job because the car couldnt fit their luggage etc...

So yeah under 3-4 years old, good reliability and hopefully not needing any work for a good while, economical.... i have never bought a car so it's all new to me.

when i select trader all the cars that appear are dealerships like arnold clark etc... am i missing something ?

Don't select trader select all sales. Ford Mondeo here http://www.autotrader.co.uk/search/used ... earch/true

Skoda Superb here http://www.autotrader.co.uk/search/used ... rt/default

My 2006 Mondeo was £4500 when bought at 65K miles 5 years ago

4 years later it sold for £1100 with 180K on the clock

repairs in year 3+4 (total) about £2500

so £4500+£2500= £7000 less £1100 = £5900/4 = £1475/year or £28/week, leaving no residual for the next car

have you had an insurance quote? thats a killer for newbies

On our base the rents are £150/week for a PDA or £300/week for a 24/7 car with PDA

that means you pay £150/week for the car, thats even tighter than the OP's £200 when it comes to justifying buying a car, I only rent a PDA (£20 saturdays day shift) cos i dont do weekdays during term time having my own £500/week school run, well why would i?

i paid £3800 for my current car, in 14 months its had £1000 spent on but that included an oil change and also big service (cambelt, aux belt, 4 tyres, front pads+discs), good oil is £60 a change (Magnatec)

I have recently bought a couple of Ford Focus estate cars from Witham Specialist Vehicles. Take a look at this one that is available at the moment. Less than 14,000 miles from new.

Yeah this is a tough one mate. You don't need to answer this but this may help make your decision. Did you save up this money while renting? If you did then buying will most certainly work. If the money is a gift then proceed with caution. Wannabe is right............to an extent. This is my second time around the car buying side of things. I learned a few valuable lessons first time around.

First. The perceived less hours you will have to work compared to renting. Get that thought out of your head now!!!. Think long term as much as you can. Once you have bought, you will have to buy again. So where is the money going to come from? Get a jar and the difference saved to renting per week goes in the jar! Guess what, that is your next car money and the inevitable repairs in year 3 as wannabe alluded to. You work endeavour does not change. I don't see much difference between buying and renting......only that you get a slightly quieter life buying if you keep on top of things. The trade is gone mate unless you are in London. It is just a job now for most of us. You are just servicing the costs and treading water. Which brings me on to hire purchase.

If you can get it. Do it. New car. 3 years return it back. Start again. All the while keeping that 6 and half grand providing you stay on top of things. Most my way do this. They know it is just a job now. I can't because I have been doing cash for so long my credit is poor. However, I am going to start building up my credit again. So in the next 4 or 5 years I will have a choice because saving up for the car I just bought was really tough. Especially after year 3. Thank god I have a great relationship with my mechanic. He helped stretch the payment for the repair bills.

One last thing. The cash you are able to get. I saved 8000 and I still think I was short. You want to get as new as you can afford. The first two years is when you build up the most money. Aim to have the cash to buy again after the first 2 years. Year 3, unless you are very lucky you will be in the garage all the time.

6500 could be a misnomer mate. It sucks doesn't it? I just managed to get a year old Toledo on that money I saved. 6500 and I would be looking at 70000 fords (which you are looking at) compared to a 30000 year old (year and a half actually) Toledo.

12000 in cash would be perfect for us all. You should have 3 years of stress free driving. saving up 4 grand per year working at your current rate and keeping the car for 5 years. Happy days. That is my aim for next time. If I fall way short it is hire purchase or exit from the trade. Poor mate in it? This is UK post 2008. I am away to get drunk. I will be calling for a cab. God help the driver!!! Oh and good luck whatever you decide. :D

Thanks mate this is exactly the kinda post i was looking for, i'm gonna give this a good re-read when i get home and take it in,i'm kinda lucky that the area i live in has only one company and any other company that comes up to rival gets bought over... i also work night and during the week make 120-150 7pm - 3am then the usual turnover at the weekend... only problem is social life is non existent and that was my reasoning for buying and cutting back a day or two.. but i guess as you say gotta build cash for the next car and repairs etc..

I have 6 grand so if from now till around feb i can raise another 6... usually putting away £500 a week... buying a car outright brand new would be the way to go ? as it comes with a warranty for 2 years ?

Have you looked at places like cab direct? You pay a deposit od £495 and pay over 5 years. A Toyota Auris is about £250 per month.

It's actually a similar place i was planning on getting the seat toledo from they are called taxi centre and i'm not sure how exactly it works but they are able to sell brand new cars much cheaper to taxi drivers.... like only a taxi driver with a badge can walk in and buy off them.... toledo is going for 12500 but anywhere else its a few thousand more.... they sell cars, offer finance, offer insurance which is cheaper if you have one of their cars... the company is based in my town but i think they are national.
