I used to stick half a gallon of unleaded in a full tank of diesel every so often to give the whole thing a good clear out. Should be fine. 8)

So with my mind on other things...... for the first time in my life, i put the wrong fuel into my rented car... and as soon as i realised ( £5 pounds worth ) i shat a brick and then filled the tank to the max with diesel.... i have driven it all night and not had any problems but i am still worried that something may go wrong ? and as it is a rental and is a a new car 2014 skoda rapid with 50,000 miles on it. I'm bricking it :-|

Now from what i've read i should never let the fuel level go below 75% and keep topping it up... but sooner or later i will need to hand the car in for a check or swap it. And handing back a rental with a full tank will look a bit suspicious.... how long would i be looking at needing to keep filling it till it's out of the system ?

thanks

Deny it ..say it was going a tad iffy when you first picked it up. :---)

why? It would be cheaper to fill it up yourself than have the renter fill it and charge you for the privilege of doing so.

i would but i'm not sure if the car had been checked/serviced before i got it off him, so i have no idea if he would know if he had run any tests to or such to be able to pretend it must have been the previous guy driving it.

Because every car i've rented has came with little to no fuel in it to begin with just enough to get you driving.. and requiring a full tank filled. So handing back a full tank would look a bit suspect i would imagine since i drove off with a nearly empty one to begin with.

Back in the 1970's in the old, old days, when diesel didn't have the anti-gelling agents in it that it has today, we used to put £2 worth of leaded petrol to £20 of diesel [and that was a full tank in an FX4] to stop it gelling in severe snow and frosty winter weather.

If you didn't do that, the coil in the diesel supply pipe just outside the fuel tank would gather up snow, freeze and the cab would stop in the middle of the road, because of fuel starvation, caused by the diesel turning to jelly.

IMHO, there is no need to worry at all about £5 of petrol to a tank of diesel.

And if we get to minus 10 deg C or below this winter, I'll probably start putting a little petrol into a tank of diesel myself, particularly if there is snow on the ground.

i'm hoping as i have to take the car in tomorrow for an alignment and bulb changing and was worried they may spot the petrol in the mix ? then again i'm probably being paranoid as why would they be even anywhere near the fuel tank :-o

I've kept the tank full before parking up every night so far and not allowed it to go below 75% capacity and haven't felt any issues or seen anything worrying so fingers crossed i can get through taking it in for these fix ups without anything being spotted lol

It's going to be fine. Let the level drop back down, you're just wasting fuel hauling a full tank around.

The petrol wouldn't have caused that. Stop worrying.

Just to give an update it seems i am worrying about nothing, When i first got the car it had been flashing up service now and i just blanked it as i thought cars say this when they get over a certain amount of mileage... but when i saw the exhaust inspection system ( solid ) and also the glow plug light ( flashing ) i just thought the worst but had a guy in the car tonight that assured me that it is just a coincidence and that those warning lights are on because of the glow plugs as he also noticed the service now warning.

So thanks for all the help and sorry to have rattled on about it for 3 pages
