Taxi Driver Online

Yesterday one of my drivers told me that whilst he was stopped at traffic lights, the driver of the vehicle in front of him, who had special needs children on board, left the engine running and got out of the vehicle and came and spoke to him.
Did the driver commit an offence by leaving his vehicle with the engine running on a main road? Do you think the Council would consider this person to be no longer "fit and proper"?

As it happens, both drivers were driving for me. The driver who left his vehicle was suspended this morning pending further inquiries. however he has since tendered his resignation.

If i were him i'd be looking at your company's TRAINING Documents regarding him being fully trained BY THE COMPANY in all aspects of being in charge of the vehicle, if there was a another member of staff on board the vehicle supervising the children YOU might have a problem, that said he should know better

Maybe a final written warning valid for 12 months might be more appropriate

Get a grip,leaving the engine running ! What a horrendous thing to do

so it is one of the children presumably unescorted slams into the gear lever and who knows Releases the hand brake ? jumps on the accelerator ? who knows !

given the training regime was up to scratch and that can be substantiated maybe it wont go any further ?

From what ive seen of Grandad's post's over a year or so i would expect that all this has been covered ........but of course the Driver actions could initiate a Major inquiry by the Council into Grandads company and its training regime and then it gets complicated ......................i still believe ALL childrens transport should be provided by the council and definitely NOT sub contractors!

even if there was an escort present leaving the engine running when absent from the vehicle was very dangerous!

What exactly constitutes Leaving a vehicle unattended with the engine running..is It simply being outwith the vehicle, a foot away and looking under the bonnet, 4 foot away and looking at it, 10 foot away checking it isnt smoking excessively, 30 foot away to pick up the mat that got you out of the snow...or 15 foot away talking to your mate behind you...

Though a professional driver leaving a special needs passenger alone in a vehicle at a set of traffic lights for a wee natter was a truly Doh! moment..engine running or not.

Im pretty sure "unattended" is out of sight.

My thoughts were that with the driver talking to the driver of the car behind, what would happen if any old mush had jumped into the drivers seat and drove off with the kids. maybe it was unlikely to happen but plenty of people have had their cars stolen for leaving them with the engines running. It would probably mean that the insurance would be invalid as well.
