They were probably the office and warehouse staff, parcel firms prefer S/E owner drivers cos they work longer hours, and stand the vehicle costs themselves, as I say, I was in at Businesspost with upto 3 vans+drivers years ago at £150/day, I also did Hellman's, NCN and Concord but got out by the skin of my teeth, I even had to take Businesspost to court fot £3000 they witheld without reason (new manager disliked paying a half day rate for not using a van+driver id sent in ay 6am)

If they are employees then they will get 90 days redundancy pay.

Maybe after a long wait if ACAS pay them

As I say, many (if not most) of the drivers will have been self employed, id guess that far more of the visible face of City Link (i.e. the vans) were not company owned

City Link van driver Simon Judd tells the Mirror, "I was having a great Christmas until I was told by my union that City Link was putting everyone out of work - including me.

"Nobody from the company has contacted me. I found out by email from the RMT.

"I'm a sub-contracted driver at a depot in Chelmsford. The majority of us are on a freelance deal because City Link got rid of most of its staff drivers in the past year.

"As part of my deal I had to rent a liveried van, which is sitting on my driveway with the firm's symbol on it. There's no way I can get a new job with the same van.

"Many people feel misled. We asked the management about job losses weeks ago when a rumour went around. They rejected those rumours. Now look where we are."

Hello? and you didnt get out then?......ooopsadaisy

I suspect you are right.

Staff EMPLOYED by City Link will have their redundancy paid by the state as my drivers did when my bus company went broke 12 years ago.

Self-employed drivers will get sweet f a from anywhere; the contractors may just get a bit of anything that's left. Maybe this debacle will expose the "self-employed-on-a-big-scale" racket for what it is.

It used to be that the Revenue was the preferential creditor. these days they have to take a back seat as the employees are the only preferential creditors and get paid first. Everyone else has to wait to see what's left in the pot, so the poor contractor waiting for his £70k invoices to be paid may be disappointed.

I suppose we all want cheaper parcel deliveries but in the end someone has to pay the price.

meanwhile the insolvency practioners will charge £100 per A4 letter, £200 per hour for a secretary to type it and £10 for a stamp till the available funds (if the owners havent bled it) have run out, the directors will also put a bill for busting the firm...

The directors will get statutory redundancy pay from the state. They can't put in bills for busting the company. Well I suppose they could, but they would be in the long list of creditors who will get nothing. I speak from bitter experience.

I wonder if this will set in process a look by the authorities at the bogus self employment lark.

Be interesting if it did. :-k

it wasnt bogus, the OD's at Hellmanns had been happy on £160+ per day for many years, some got SO happy they bought extra vans and employed drivers for many years, same at NCN and Concord, the problem isnt the S/E

Only if they were PAYE employee's i think, directors arent always employees, they can be on the list of creditors though
