Woman, 22, claims Bristol taxi driver made her 'touch his private parts' and put tongue in her mouth

Abukar Jimale, 46, of Halston Drive in St Paul's, denies sexual assault and causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent in August 2013

A WOMAN has claimed that a taxi driver who picked her up forcefully kissed her and made her touch his private parts. The 22-year-old told a jury she had been on a night out in Bristol when the cabbie assaulted her after driving her to Temple Meads station.

She told Bristol Crown Court: "He put his tongue in my mouth.

"I sort of like froze, really. It lasted 20 seconds. I kind of just sat there."

Abukar Jimale, 46, of Halston Drive in St Paul's, denies sexual assault and causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent in August 2013.

The woman said she left friends after a night out and ended up walking on Bath Road in the early hours.

She said she felt uncomfortable, and rang a male friend who agreed to pick her up outside Temple Meads.

Then a large taxi pulled up, she said, and the driver asked where she was going. The driver offered to take her to the station, saying he was going that way.

The woman said that, amid small talk, the driver offered to take her home to Bath for just £20, which she thought was "a bit weird", as she would expect to pay double that fare.

She said the driver said he lived on his own in St Paul's. He was very complimentary about her appearance.

The woman said: "He told me 'I wish I had a girl like you'. I just shrugged it off.

"He said about staying with him, he said he was on his own. I just said 'no'."

The driver drove into the station approach and parked, declining payment.

The woman told the jury: "I thought it was a bit weird. That was when he kissed me. I was facing towards him.

"He kissed me on the lips, it was quite forcefully.

"He put his tongue in my mouth.

"I sort of like froze, really. It lasted 20 seconds.

"I kind of just sat there."

The complainant said her hand was then moved from outside to inside his trousers, on to his private parts.

She said she grabbed her bag from under the seat and got out of the car.

After making it obvious she was taking a photo of the vehicle on her camera phone, she rang a girlfriend and what had happened hit her and she was very upset.

She said her friend turned up and they hugged before calling police, who arrived about an hour later.

The case continues.

Bristol taxi driver accused of sexually assaulting drunk passenger claims she kissed him as she thanked him for helping

A TAXI driver accused of sexually assaulting a drunk passenger claimed it was he who was kissed by her as she thanked him for helping.

Abukar Jimale, 46, of Halston Drive, St Paul's, said he had to push the 20-year-old away as she tried to thank him for picking her up in distress and giving her a free lift.

He denies that he kissed her, put his tongue in her mouth and placed her hands on his private parts.

He also denies that eight months later he grabbed a teenage passenger's hand after asking her: "What's your name, beautiful?"

Jimale has pleaded not guilty to sexual assault and causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent in August 2013. He has not been charged in relation to the second alleged incident.

Taking the stand yesterday, Jimale said he was parked on Bath Road near Arnos Vale Cemetery in August counting his takings when a woman approached. She knocked on his door and he pulled the window down.

"She was in a very bad state," he said. "She was crying she was scared and wasn't feeling good. She was talking while she was crying. She was saying 'I'm alone, can you help me? Please take me to Temple Meads'."

He said she told him she had no money but he decided to take her as he could see she was distressed.

He stopped along the way, he said, to ask her if she wanted him to call the police for her.

She declined the offer and asked him to continue on the journey.

After arriving at Temple Meads, he said she leaned over, held his head and kissed him.

"She kissed me on the cheek and said thank you very much," he said. "She kissed me on the cheek and the chin. I was trying to hold her back because it was against my culture and my profession.

"I said 'this is not appropriate' and she said 'it is OK, thank you very much'."

After he was arrested, Jimale, who was born in Somalia, went to a doctor due to stress. "I was shocked and confused," he said.

Prosecuting, David Scutt, accused Jimale of preying on vulnerable girls late at night.

He said: "This was you taking advantage of a drunk girl thinking you would get away with it."

Jimale replied: "How could I take advantage of someone in this kind of area? There were people there and cars everywhere – it was a bank holiday."

In relation to the second allegation against him, the court heard details of his work on the night in question. A list of jobs were read out which showed he had taken passengers to Easton, Fishponds and up Whiteladies Road.

Jimale was alleged to have picked up a Bristol University student at around 3am on Whiteladies Road, offering to take her to her halls of residence.

After grabbing her hand and talking about going via the Downs, she started to dial 999 on her phone and got the driver to let her out – before completing her 999 call and reading his registration number to police.

Jimale denied the allegations saying he was parked outside the taxi office at this time speaking with two friends.

Mr Scutt said: "Another young lady out late at night, drunk and vulnerable. Another young lady you tried to target in a similar way."

He added: "You have lied and lied and lied. You used your family, your health and even your faith to save your skin."

The case continues.

Bristol taxi driver convicted of sex assault on woman passenger

A BRISTOL taxi driver has been found guilty of sexual assault on a woman passenger.

Abukar Jimale, of Halston Drive in St Paul’s, had denied the charge and another of causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent in August 2013.

But a jury of six men and six women found the 46-year-old guilty of both charges yesterday and he was bailed pending sentencing on a date to be fixed.

Bristol Crown Court was told he had forcefully kissed the woman and made her put her hand into his trousers and touch his private parts.

The 22-year-old complainant said she had “frozen” during the incident, which had happened at Temple Meads station after Jimale had seen her walking in Bath Road in the early hours of the morning and offered her a ride to the station, where a friend was waiting to meet her.

She told the jury that Jimale had said: “I wish I had a girl like you,” then asked her to stay with him.

After the assault the woman had got out of the car and taken a picture of it before telling her friend what had happened and calling police.

Jimale had claimed that he had taken the woman to the station after she knocked on his door, crying, and begged him to take her to Temple Meads.

He claimed she had told him she had no money but he decided to help her as he could see she was distressed.

After arriving at Temple Meads, he said, she had kissed him and thanked him.

Jimale told the jury: “I was trying to hold her back because it was against my culture and my profession.”

But David Scutt, prosecuting, said Jimale had preyed on vulnerable girls late at night and thought he could get away with it.

The jury heard evidence from another woman, a Bristol University student, who had dialled 999 from Jimale’s taxi after he grabbed her hand and talked about taking her to the Downs.

Mr Scutt said this was “another young lady out late at night, drunk and vulnerable. Another young lady you tried to target in a similar way”.

He told Jimale: “You have lied and lied and lied. You used your family, your health and even your faith to save your skin.”
