Death threats and drugs probe at Sevenoaks taxi rank

SEVENOAKS taxi chiefs have launched an investigation into allegations that a cabbie took drugs, made death threats and was abusive to other drivers.

Ray Gomes of 7oaks Cars has also been accused of overcharging one customer and refusing to take another who was in a wheelchair.

In evidence to be heard by Sevenoaks District Council’s licensing subcommittee next month, one passenger even claims that when she challenged him over a high fare he told her: “Get out my car and if you want to complain, complain.”

However Mr Gomes has hit back saying he and cabbies from his firm are the victims of an orchestrated campaign of false allegations.

He says other drivers have subjected him to abusive language and he claims they jump queues at taxi ranks deliberately to provoke a confrontation.

He has also cited a list of crime reference numbers where he has made complaints to police.

“I have had death threats, my vehicles being a target for vandalism/damage on a regular basis, nuisance and malicious calls,” he said in papers submitted to the council.

In total 12 complaints were levelled at Mr Gomes between March and November last year.

One woman cabbie, who asked council officials not to identify her, said she had quit the taxi rank at Sevenoaks station after Mr Gomes “frequently” swore at her using “the c word” and called her a “stupid b****”.

Another driver who once worked with Mr Gomes, Bartosz Wlodarczyk, said his former colleague was “generally trying to be as nasty as possible by pretending he’s shooting me then blowing kisses”.

He added that during the period they worked together “he was regularly rude, aggressive and cheated me on my wages.

“I regularly saw him taking drugs.”

Cabbie Duncan Cheeseman wrote to the council saying “Please be aware that Ray Gomez (sic) has threatened to kill me and that I should ‘watch my back’ as a result of a minor dispute on the rank.”

Another, M Hassan, told the council that Mr Gomes had “annoyed almost all the other drivers” by “not taking customers who only want to travel a short distance or not moving his car along the line when the rank is busy”.

“You should also know he has had a number of physical fights with several drivers over a long period of time,” he said, adding: “His actions give all the other drivers an undeserved tainted reputation.”

Taxi driver Steve Batchelor accused Mr Gomes of refusing a wheelchair customer “because he said his boot was too small”.

Cabbie Kevin Lear said he’d been asked if he “wanted to go somewhere else to sort it out” after arguing with Mr Gomes at a taxi rank.

And taxi veteran and former cab rep Rodger Landless said: “I have never had to deal with an individual like Ray Gomez (sic).

“It appears to me that it is his daily remit to annoy other drivers and disrespect the rules that govern our trade.”

In a report to the licensing subcommittee, the council’s chief officer for operational services, Richard Wilson said: “Mr Gomes alleges that he has received death threats, his vehicles have been targeted for vandalism and damaged on a regular basis.

“He says he has received nuisance and malicious calls, been harassed and verbally abused.

“Mr Gomes has been warned on several occasions by officers of the licensing authority regarding his behaviour towards other taxi drivers.”

At next month’s hearing, licensing chiefs will have to decide whether Mr Gomes – who has been a Sevenoaks cabbie since May 2009 – is a “fit and proper person” to hold a Hackney carriage driver’s licence.

Mr Wilson said committee members will have to ask themselves: “Would you allow your son, daughter, mother, spouse or other person you care about (to) get into this vehicle with this person alone?”

If only someone could invent a system that records footage and audio of events via little cameras in cars.

Life would be so much easier.

Rogue Sevenoaks taxi driver makes bid to appeal council's ruling

Image

A rogue taxi driver stripped of his licence by the Sevenoaks District Council is making a bid to return to the taxi ranks.

Ray Gomes has appealed the council's decision to suspend his hackney carriage vehicle licence, after the local authority ruled that he had been sexist, abusive and threatening towards other drivers in February.

Mr Gomes, of 7oaks Cars, was ordered to hand over his badge on the spot following the three-and-a-half-hour licensing hearing in February.

District councillors on a specially convened panel stripped him of his right to operate a hackney carriage after hearing details of 12 complaints levelled at him by other taxi drivers between March and November last year.

Chief among these was that he had subjected the only female cabbie on the Sevenoaks station rank to a sustained campaign of bad language which ultimately forced her to quit.

Mr Gomes will appear in court for the hearing on June 23.

'Sexist and abusive' Sevenoaks taxi driver to have appeal over stripped licence heard in court

A taxi driver who had his licence seized for sexist and abusive behaviour toward others cabbies is to have his appeal heard on Friday.

Ray Gomes, of 7oaks Cars, was forced to hand his badge over on the spot following a licensing hearing at Sevenoaks District Council in February.

He will have his appeal over the decision to suspend his hackney carriage vehicle licence heard at Sevenoaks Magistrates' Court on Friday.

Mr Gomes, a taxi driver since 2006, was stripped of his licence following 12 complaints levelled at him by taxi drivers between March and November last year.

He was alleged to have prompted the only female cabbie on the Sevenoaks station rank into quitting after a sustained campaign of bad language.

Some of Mr Gomes' fellow taxi drivers on the rank are expected to give evidence against him in court on Friday.

He claimed at the February hearing he was the victim of an orchestrated campaign by the town's cabbies and had suffered abusive language, threats, vandalism and malicious calls.

The panel found he had been sexist, abusive and threatening and had refused to take a wheelchair-bound customer.

It rejected claims against Mr Gomes of harassment and drug-taking and recognised he had himself suffered abuse from some of the town's taxi drivers.

The council declined to comment on Friday's hearing as it is an ongoing legal matter.

'Abusive' Sevenoaks taxi driver Raymond Gomes faces £9k legal bill after losing appeal

A Sevenoaks taxi driver has been ordered to pay more than £9,000 in costs after losing an appeal against Sevenoaks District Council.

Raymond Gomes bought an appeal against the Council after its Licensing Sub-Committee made a decision earlier this year to suspend his Hackney Carriage Drivers' Licence. Following the decision Mr Gomes' licence was suspended between February 2 and April 18 this year.

On Friday 18 December the Central Kent Magistrates' Court dismissed Mr Gomes' appeal and found in favour of the Council.

The court heard that between March 2014 and November 2014 the Council received 12 complaints from other Hackney carriage drivers citing various allegations of improper behaviour.

They included accusations of sexism, threatening behaviour and abuse.

Following these complaints Mr Gomes was invited to attend a licensing hearing on February 2 where the committee heard evidence against Mr Gomes as well as hearing evidence from Mr Gomes himself, his solicitor and other witnesses.

As a result of this meeting Mr Gomes' licence was suspended for a period of 10 weeks until 18 April 2015.

The court found that having heard all the evidence it was satisfied that the sub-committee's decision to suspend Mr Gomes' Hackney Carriage Licence was correct and that Mr Gomes' behaviour was sufficient to cause distress to members of the public and he was therefore not at that time a fit and proper person to hold a taxi licence.

As well as losing the appeal Mr Gomes was also ordered to pay costs of £9,425.

Sevenoaks District Council, Council Leader Cllr Peter Fleming said: "I'm pleased the court agreed with our initial decision. We take complaints very seriously and it is important residents and workers feel happy with any service provided to them within the district and this is why the sub-committee suspended his hackney carriage licence."

Please note Mr Gomes continues to work in the District having applied and been successful in gaining a new Hackney Carriage Licence following the expiration of his previous licence on 18 April 2015.
