Sex pest taxi driver preyed on passengers and lied to get second licence after string of complaints about creepy behaviour

MICHAEL BOYD locked terrified women in his cab while making indecent comments to them and admitted placing passengers in a state of fear or alarm and lying on his licence application.

A SEX pest taxi driver terrified women by locking them in his cab, a court was told.

Michael Boyd, 33, gave up his licence after complaints about his creepy conduct.

But he then lied to get a licence for a neighbouring area – where he continued to prey on his female passengers.

He leered at women and sat outside their houses for as long as half an hour after dropping them off.

And some passengers believed he had been performing a sex act on himself shortly before they got into his vehicle.

Boyd is awaiting sentence next month at Paisley Sheriff Court after admitting placing passengers in a state of fear or alarm and lying on his licence application.

He gave up his East Ayrshire licence in 2013 but when he applied to East Renfrewshire last year he avoided the complaints against him being detected by saying he had never held a permit before.

The court was told Boyd picked up a woman from a party in Neilston, Renfrewshire, in the early hours of last June 28.

Pamela Flynn, prosecuting, said he told the woman she had “nice boobs”.

She went on: “The witness was shocked and felt it was inappropriate.

“The accused carried on into comments about her being out of his league but he just wanted to have sex with her. He repeated himself, asking why he couldn’t get a girlfriend. She noted the doors were locked and that he was driving on a back road.”

The victim was so scared for her safety that she texted and phoned her brother and got Boyd to go and pick up her boyfriend.

A week earlier, Boyd, from Kilmarnock, leered over another woman he took to her home in Barrhead.

Flynn said: “When he dropped her off he asked her if she would go out with him. She refused, saying she had a boyfriend.

“The witness noted he drove to the end of the street, turned his vehicle around and sat outside her home for a further 30 minutes, which added to her concerns about the accused’s behaviour.”

In March last year, he locked another woman in the back of his cab after picking her up in Glasgow city centre.

He began ranting at her, quizzing her on why she was still single.

Flynn told Sheriff David Pender: “She was very aware of the accused looking her up and down, which made her feel uncomfortable.

“He went into a rant, saying he was 31 and had never had a girlfriend. He then harassed her about whether she would date him or set him up.”

In April last year, Flynn said, Boyd left a couple feeling uneasy after picking them up at a flat in Glasgow’s Dennistoun area to take them back to Paisley.

Flynn said: “Both witnesses were extremely concerned that the driver’s seat was quite far back, to the extent that the girl in the back had to sit side on.

“They also noted the accused appeared to be really fidgety and nervous. They formed the view that he had been masturbating shortly before they got in.”

The couple decided to leave the car but the doors were locked.

After they argued with Boyd about it, he stopped the vehicle and let them out, not bothering to ask them for any money towards the fare.

Boyd was working as a taxi driver in his home town in 2013 before giving up his licence and went on to work the Glasgow area with his East Renfrewshire permit.

Sheriff Pender ordered him to be assessed by social workers and a group who work with sex offenders.

East Renfrewshire taxi creep must wait to hear his fate

A creepy cabbie who locked a female passenger in his car and told her he wanted to have sex with her has to wait another month to learn his fate.

Twisted taxi driver Michael Boyd — who also told the woman she had “nice boobs” — made the sleazy comments after picking her up from a party in Neilston.

He pretended to be an old friend of hers and then drove down a quiet back road where he propositioned her.

Boyd picked the woman up from the village’s Robertson Crescent at about 2.30am on June 28 last year.

She thought he was someone she knew and began speaking to him.

He didn’t correct her and pretended to be the pal she thought he was.

Pamela Flynn, prosecuting, told Paisley Sheriff Court: “The accused carried on into comments about her being out of his league but he just wanted to have sex with her.

“He repeated himself, asking why he couldn’t get a girlfriend.

“She noted the doors were locked and that he was driving on a back road and was not amongst a built-up area.”

She was so scared for her safety she contacted her brother and got Boyd to go and pick up her boyfriend.

After collecting her partner Boyd raced back to her home so fast that her boyfriend had to ask Boyd to slow down.

When she arrived at her home, in Barrhead’s Braeside Crescent, she was “shaken up and distressed.”

Seven days before he targeted the woman, who can’t be named for legal reasons, he leered over another passenger as he took her back to her Barrhead home.

He got the call to take her to the town’s Graham Street after picking her up in Paisley’s New Street.

Flynn said: “She was aware he was continually looking at her in his mirror, which caused her some concern.

“When he dropped her off he asked her if she would go out with him.

“She refused, saying she had a boyfriend.

“The witness noted he drove to the end of the street, turned his vehicle around and sat outside her home for a further 30 minutes, which added to her concerns about the accused’s behaviour.”

He was due to be sentenced over the creepy cab rides - which left some passengers believing he had been performing a sex act on himself shortly before they got into his vehicle - and lying to get his East Renfrewshire taxi drivers’ license.

In 2013 he surrendered his East Ayrshire license after several women complained about his behaviour while he was working as a drive in his home town of Kilmarnock.

He applied to East Renfrewshire Council for a license to drive taxis in and around the Barrhead area and lied to get the new license, saying he had never held a taxi drivers’ license before on his application form.

He pleaded guilty to four charges of placing passengers in a state of fear or alarm, and one of lying on his taxi license application, when he appeared in the dock last month and sentence was deferred until today.

But the case against the 33-year-old — who also targeted women in Glasgow — was adjourned until next month on the advice of social workers who interviewed him between his court appearances.

They were unable to decide what punishment best suits Boyd without having him assessed by a psychiatrist.

Sheriff David Pender called for a forensic psychiatric assessment and deferred sentence further.

Minicab driver locked women in cab and threatened rape

A TWISTED minicab driver locked female passengers in his car during late-night cab rides and threatened to rape them.

Michael Boyd, 33, is facing jail for a series of creepy cab rides in Glasgow where he locked several women in his vehicle and asked them why he didn't have a girlfriend.

The Hampden Cars driver also ogled female passengers and sat outside their houses for as long as half an hour after dropping them off,
Boyd admitted placing four women in a state of fear and alarm and lying to council bosses to get a minicab license when he appeared in court earlier this year.

He will have to wait to learn his fate - because a sheriff was only given a crucial psychiatric assessment "seconds" before he was due to sentence him.

He locked one terrified woman in the back of his private hire vehicle and told her he wanted to have sex with her.

He made the chilling comments to the woman while driving down a back road after pretending he was an old friend.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard that Boyd had been working as a minicab driver in his home town of Kilmarnock in 2013.

Several women made complaints about his behaviour while they were in his cab so he surrendered his license.

He then applied to East Renfrewshire council for a license to drive minicabs in and around the Glasgow area.

He lied to get the new license, saying he had never held a minicab drivers' license before on his application form.

East Renfrewshire Council granted him a minicab driver's license on April 7 last year and he began driving for Hampden Cabs.

The incidents, which took place in Glasgow's Dennistoun area, the town of Barrhead and village of Neilston, East Renfrewshire, began taking place just a few weeks later.

When Boyd admitted his guilt Sheriff David Pender called for him to be assessed by social workers and a group that works with sex offenders in Renfrewshire.

He returned to the dock last month and sentence was deferred again after a social worker who interviewed Boyd suggested he be examined by a forensic psychiatrist.

He was back in court yesterday, expecting to finally receive his punishment his summer 2014 offences.

But Sheriff David Pender was unable to pass sentence because he received the crucial psychiatric assessment just seconds before the case began.

A court worker brought three copies of the assessment into the courtroom just before the case started.

He deferred sentence on Boyd until next week.

East Renfrewshire taxi perv must wait to hear fate

Michael Boyd was due to be sentenced at Paisley Sheriff Court but the matter was put off until next week because a sheriff was only given a crucial psychiatric assessment "seconds" before he was due to sentence him. The court previously heard how Boyd locked one terrified woman in the back of his private hire vehicle, told her she had "nice boobs" and said he wanted to have sex with her. He made the chilling comments to the woman while driving down a back road after pretending he was an old friend. Seven days before he targeted the woman, who can't be named for legal reasons, he leered over another passenger as he took her back to her Barrhead home. He got the call to take Jasmin Waters to the town's Graham Street after picking her up in Paisley's New Street. The 33-year-old is facing jail for a series of creepy cab rides where he locked several women in his vehicle and asked them why he didn't have a girlfriend.

He also ogled female passengers and sat outside their houses for as long as half an hour after dropping them off, while other passengers believed he had been performing a sex act on himself shortly before they got into his vehicle. But Sheriff Pender was unable to pass sentence because he received the crucial psychiatric assessment just seconds before the case began. A court worker brought three copies of the assessment into the courtroom just before the case started. One was given to Boyd's solicitor, Neil McPherson, one was given to the court social worker and the other was given to the sheriff. When he came onto the bench, Sheriff Pender said: "I only received the report about 10 seconds ago." McPherson replied: "I think I was slightly longer - I got it about 40 seconds ago."

Sheriff Pender said: "These are very serious charges. I want to take some time to read the assessment and then read the report again. "I want to take some time to think about it - I'm not prepared to deal with this today. I'm not prepared to rush into dealing with this." He deferred sentence on Boyd until next week. -

Minicab-driving creep keeps licence after councillors ignore police warnings about danger he posed to women

MICHAEL BOYD, 34, was allowed to stay behind the wheel after East Ayrshire councillors ignored police warnings he was a menace to female

A MINICAB driver was allowed to stay at the wheel after councillors ignored police warnings about the danger he posed to women passengers.

Michael Boyd, 34, went on to harass eight women and last week was jailed for 15 months.

He locked two victims in his cab, telling one he wanted to have sex with her and demanding another woman’s phone number.

He stalked a third female in the streets and at her workplace then traced a former partner to her home and bombarded her with phone calls and text messages.

And he told a lone passenger on a trip to Kilmarnock that he hated women from the town and described them as “sluts”.

Two years ago, Boyd appeared before a licensing panel in East Ayrshire where senior police officers raised concerns about his behaviour and attitude to women.

They urged councillors to take away Boyd’s minicab badge, which had already been suspended after complaints.

But at a private meeting, he was allowed to stay on the road and went on to commit a series of offences.

The licensing meeting was held at East Ayrshire’s council HQ in Kilmarnock in August 2013.

Six councillors – chairman Tom Cook, Andrew Hershaw, George Mair, Neil McGhee, Kathy Morrice and Moira Pirie – made up the panel.

Two officers from Police Scotland – an inspector and a sergeant – also attended along with Boyd, from Kilmarnock, and his lawyer.

Boyd’s minicab licence had already been suspended after complaints were lodged against him two months earlier. But the panel decided to lift the ban and reject the police bid to have the private hire licence revoked.

In the published minutes of the meeting, the council wrote: “The licence holder was further advised that the panel had given the allegations serious consideration and that if he was brought before the panel in the future for any matter, the outcome was likely to be different.”

Boyd finally surrendered his East Ayrshire minicab licence after further complaints in 2014.

But he then applied for – and was granted – a new licence after lying to officials in neighbouring East Renfrewshire.

He told them he had never applied for a licence elsewhere and police in East Renfrewshire were unaware of their colleagues’ concerns in Ayrshire.

Within weeks of being granted the new licence, Boyd was offending there too. At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court last week, Boyd admitted two charges of threatening or abusive behaviour and two of causing fear and alarm, between February 2014 and March this year.

In January, he had appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court and admitted charges of placing four women in fear and alarm and lying in his minicab driver application.

A spokeswoman for East Ayrshire licensing committee said: “The licence was suspended on an emergency basis in June 2013 following complaints but the panel lifted that suspension on August 1 after hearing full details.

“The licence was suspended again in February 2014 following further complaints about his conduct whereupon he surrendered the licence.

“He then went to East Renfrewshire Council and provided false information on a new minicab licence application and this was then granted.”

East Renfrewshire licensing committee said: “Our checks are robust and in line with other licensing committees across Scotland.

“Before we grant a licence, we always do a background check which involves ¬contacting Police Scotland who carry out a full DVLA and criminal background check.

“Because Mr Boyd had no criminal convictions against him, he was granted a licence.”

East Ayrshire previously granted a minicab licence to a driver who had 49 convictions, including assault, theft and driving while disqualified and without insurance.

In that case, the council said a panel had “fully considered” all previous convictions.

Police Scotland said: “Michael Boyd applied to East Renfrewshire Council in March 2014 for a private hire minicab driver’s licence. All relevant police checks were carried out with negative result.

“Police Scotland is currently developing a national IT system which will allow each of the 14 divisions to cross-check applications from each of the 32 authorities and act as a single point of reference for licences that had been granted/revoked by the relevant local authority.”

Victim: I was terrified but the council didn't care

ONE of Boyd’s victims ¬yesterday hit out at East Ayrshire Council for allowing Boyd to keep his licence.

He targeted the 47-year-old Kilmarnock mum six months after he was allowed back on the road.

She said: “As soon as I got in the minicab, he began acting strangely. He kept on moving about in his seat and looking at me.

“Boyd told me he couldn’t get a girlfriend and that he hated all women in ¬Kilmarnock. He shouted at me three times, once after I told him I was married.

“As soon as I got home, I threw him a tenner and did not wait for the change.

“I ran into the house because I was scared he would follow me. The council should have taken tougher action when they had the chance.

“I complained to the minicab firm and then the council, who took a full statement. But I heard nothing back.” The woman says she’s stopped travelling in minicabs alone.

She added: “I still feel upset. I’m glad that the authorities are doing something to make it harder for people like Boyd to get minicab licences.

“Unfortunately, it is too late for some of his victims.”

Creepy minicab driver jailed for behaviour towards female passengers

A minicab driver who locked female passengers in his car and made inappropriate sexual remarks to them during late night trips has been given a lengthy jail sentence.

Michael Boyd's behaviour included telling a woman passenger she had nice boobs and that he wanted to have sex with her after locking her in the back of his private hire vehicle.

The former Hampden Cars driver made the comments to the woman while driving down a back road after pretending they were old friends.

The 34-year-old, who also worked for Compass Cars in Barrhead also stared at female passengers and sat outside their homes for as long as half an hour after dropping them off, while a couple he collected believed he had masterbating beforehand.

Boyd had earlier admitted at Paisley Sheriff Court to placing four women in a state of fear and alarm and lying to council bosses to get a license.

On Tuesday, Sheriff David Pender jailed him for six months and placed him on the Sex Offenders' Register for seven years.

Boyd showed no emotion as he was told he was being jailed.

He picked up one of his victims from a party at around 2.30am in June last year.

She was so scared for her safety that she texted and phoned her brother and got Boyd to go and pick up her boyfriend.

Pamela Flynn, prosecuting, had told the court he was over familiar with the victim and he stated 'you've got nice boobs'.

"The accused carried on into comments about her being out of his league but he just wanted to have sex with her," she added.

Boyd is already serving 15 months in prison for similar offences.

Have I got this right? He has been sentenced to a jail term for this behaviour and the council let him keep his badge!!!
I doubt that we have heard the last about this.

Not sure that was implied by the last article.
