Predator: Police say David Perry could have assaulted other women

A black cab driver who sexually assaulted two young women who fell asleep in his taxi may have preyed on more victims, police fear.

David Perry, of Gayton House in Bow, pleaded guilty to one count of attempted rape, one count of assault by penetration and one count of sexual assault against one victim and one count of sexual assault on a second victim today.

The attacks took place in January 2013 in north London and May last year in east London.

Both offences were committed in the early hours of the morning against women in their 20s who had been out socialising before getting into Perry's cab and falling asleep. When they woke up they each found him assaulting them in the two attacks.

Police linked DNA from both crimes to the same offender but it did not match any existing profiles on the database.

In August last year the black London taxi registered to Perry was identified as a vehicle of interest.

The 52-year-old, who has no previous convictions, was arrested and his DNA was matched to both attacks.

Perry has been a cab driver for 25 years and police appealed for any other potential victims to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Samantha Price said: "Perry, as the driver of an iconic black taxi, was in a position of trust. Sadly, he breached that trust by targeting women who he perceived to be vulnerable.

"Thankfully, those women came forward and reported him to the police. Today, I must praise them both for their strength and determination to see him brought to justice.

"Perry was a taxi driver for some 25 years and I must consider the possibility he may have committed other offences that have not been reported to the police.

"As part of this investigation we have made detailed enquiries into his past and eliminated unsolved cases from this enquiry.

"I would now appeal directly to anyone, who as a result of this case, thinks they may have been raped or assaulted by Perry.

"I would like to reassure anyone worried about coming forward that they will be treated with the utmost sensitivity and specially trained officers will be available to listen to them and support them through each step."

Perry pleaded guilty on what would have been the first day of a trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court in east London.

He was remanded in custody ahead of sentencing next month.

It goes to show the CRB/DBS doesn't work if you've never been caught before. A mate in the bus industry managed to do something similar, had a vast quantity of the wrong sort of pictures on his computer but held a psv licence and transport manager licence. He too had never been caught before, hence the CRB showed no problem. He got 4 years.

Jailed: Black cab driver jailed who carried out sex attacks on sleeping passengers

A black taxi driver was jailed for ten years today for sex attacks on women passengers who fell asleep in his taxi.

David Perry, 52, preyed on women who were drunk and stripped them in the back of his cab before sexually abusing them.

Sentencing at Snaresbrook Crown Court, Judge John Lafferty said born again Christian Perry had betrayed the trust of his passengers.

“Both victims were vulnerable because of their levels of intoxication. You deliberately targeted them because of their vulnerable state,” said the judge.

“You committed the first offence and, believing that you had got away with it, you took the opportunity to commit a further offence when the opportunity presented itself. These attacks were sustained assaults.”

Judge Lafferty imposed an extended five year licence period, a sexual harm prevention order banning Perry from ever taking another public driving job and ordered him to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely.

Father of two, Perry, a former Tube driver of Bow, had pleaded guilty on what would have been the first day of his trial in February to attempted rape, assault by penetration and two counts of sexual assault on two different victims.

The court heard that Perry had attacked his first victim after picking her up in the East End in January 2013.

Sixteen months later Perry struck again after picking up his second victim in Shoreditch who described as “heavily intoxicated.”

The cab driver was eventually tracked down by DNA and detectives piecing together CCTV, TfL camera footage and number place recognition technology.

He told detectives he believed he had been suffering from an overactive libido after the end of a long-running relationship.

Both victims suffered psychological damage and needed counselling as a result of their ordeal.

The second victim said in an impact statement read to the court that: “Before the incident, I was very independent and enjoyed being in the company of others but now I feel a sense of isolation and loneliness.”

She went on: “My life has changed forever and it will never be the same. I will be reminded of this incident for every day of the rest of my life.”
