Drunken duo jailed for sex attack on woman taxi driver near Dearne hotelTwo pals who sexually assaulted a female taxi driver while on a drunken night out are now behind bars.
Lewis Thompson, 32, and James Thorley, 31, went to Holiday Inn Express in Sheffield city centre in a taxi by mistake after drinking.
They ordered the taxi driver to go to Holiday Inn Express – where they were actually staying – in Manvers Way, Wath-upon-Dearne.
But on the way to the hotel their drunken banter turned into a sexual assault on the female driver, accompanied by sexual innuendo while the taxi was moving.
Christopher Smith, prosecuting, told Sheffield Crown Court: “The victim was a public servant working at night in the confines of her own vehicle.”
The woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, told how the attack had left her fearful.
However, she has defiantly decided to continue with her job.
In a statement, read out in court, she said: “I won’t let the incident put me off my job but I will be more wary.
“It was a scary incident.”
Andrew Smith, defending both men, said they were hard working and remorseful over what happened.
He added: “It was boisterous, immature behaviour which got completely out of hand.”
Mr Smith told the court Thorley had written a letter to the victim apologising for his behaviour.
He added Thompson was a father of three children aged six, four and three who was ‘desperately sorry’ for the attack.
Thompson, of Frederick Street, and Thorley, of Huntingdon Road, both Stapenhill in Burton upon Trent, admitted sexual assault on October 26 last year.
Thompson was jailed for ten months, while Thorley was given an eight month prison sentence.
The judge Paul Watson praised the victim for her ‘fortitude’.
He described Thompson and Thorley’s actions on the night as ‘deplorable conduct’.
