Taxi fares in North Lanarkshire to go up by 10 per cent

COUNCILLORS on the Corporate Resources Committee decided that customers will pay more after taxi association representatives agreed with the proposals.

TAXI fares are set to get more expensive for passengers next month.

Customers will pay an additional 10 per cent for the first mile of their journey from March 12.

This fare will go up from £2 to £2.20 after councillors agreed the Taxi Fare review at last week’s Corporate Resources Committee.

Hires between midnight and 5am will remain as an extra charge of £1.

However, hires called — but not used — between 5am and midnight will go up from £2 to £2.20, an increase of 10 per cent.

And the charge for calling and then not using a taxi between midnight and 5am will increase 6.6 per cent from £3 to £3.20.

All other charges will remain at the current tariff.

The committee were asked to consider whether to approve the taxi trade proposals. The proposals were agreed by all of the taxi association representatives operating within the area.

Councillors were asked to note that following a taxi fare review in January 2013 that there would be no increase in taxi fares.

No objections or representations were made to the council following this year’s proposals.

The committee agreed to allow the council’s head of democratic legal services to amend the taxi fare scheme from March 12.
