Council invites readers to take part in Wirral taxi survey

Wirral Council is asking for views on how often taxi drivers should undergo medical checks.

The survey will be used to help the authority decide if more checks are needed to improve safety.

To get a licence to drive a private hire or hackney carriage, all applicants have to have a medical to show they are physically fit enough to carry out the role.

Currently, once an applicant passes the medical there are no requirements for them to have another until they reach the age of 65.

As an example, a driver who applies for a licence at 25 will take a medical - but there is no requirement for them to have any other medicals until they reach 65, some 40 years later.

To get or to keep a licence, al applicants aged 65 and over must have an annual medical check.

Other local authorities have increased the number of medicals drivers need to keep their licence, and Wirral Council is considering the same option.

Councillor Bill Davies, chairman of Wirral’s licensing committee, said: ‘We welcome initiatives to help taxi drivers in our borough continue to drive safely.

"Taxi and private hire vehicles are an essential means of transport for many, especially older or disabled people.

"Anyone using one should be able to do so safe in the knowledge that its driver meets certain safety standards."

Oh a council adhering to the law then - that's a novelty

You'd be surprised what some drivers will put on these surveys if it deters others from joining the ranks

how often do PSV and HGV drivers take medicals?

has any cab driver or minicab driver licensed by Wirral injured anyone as a result of a medical condition which would have been spotted in a medical?

Not as far as I'm aware although a driver was found dead of heart attack behind the wheel of his vehicle a few years back. Are you suggesting that they should wait until an incident occurs before they do anything about medicals?

No I'm suggested there isn't a problem.

There also isn't a problem with taxi drivers spreading anthrax - so perhaps the council should send drivers on a course - just in case

I was just asking there's no need for sarcasm  BTW there are no grey brick scally houses in Birkenhead

Now that's a better picture of Wirral

And the future is looking bright

A local cabby round here had a heart attack and ended up hitting a lampost one week after his medical.

Another I know has narcolepsy, he'll be talking to you one second and the next he's fast asleep. When asked about it he said it doesn't happen when driving, just when sitting doing nothing - although he did admit to dropping off at a set of traffic lights !
