I can see where you are coming from Skull even if your viewpoint is warped by the burnt fingers you poked into Edinburgh market.
But recent history should demonstrate that the free market does not regulate itself!

As a wise man once declared "no rules where would we be? France ! Too many rules where would we be? Germany"

We are neither! TF!

Trust me, my viewpoint isn't warped and I got more out of the taxi trade than I ever put in.

Think of it this way? There is your view which is the local market and the global view, which is a technology platform spread across many countries and driven by the app on your phone. And no mater where you are in the world, your app puts the service user together with the service provider and with no middle man.The technology basically runs itself with a few minor changes to the operating software depending on where you are? It couldn't be more simple. =D> =D> =D> =D>

All the regulations and driver licensing conditions apply in the same way as the do now. Nothing has changed. :-|

And there is nothing to stop me phoning an Edinburgh Cab to pick up in East Lothian or vice versa. In fact, my Get Taxi app allows me to do just that, it's my choice. =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>

Why should I have my choice fettered by a bunch of disgruntled taxi drivers who do not wish to move with the times? We are back to restricted markets and street corner operators that cannot compete in a global market place. :-|

So Cabhappy, tell me why the Edinburgh Cab trade should expect a privileged existence when everywhere else in the world businesses either adapt or go under?

At the end of the day you will still be driving your taxi. You might not have a silly wee badge or a committee but that's the times we are living in. Instead you will have a phone with apps and it's your choice if you want to do the work or not? In fact, this whole system is based on customer choice and putting the two together. =D> =D> =D> =D>

Or is it a question of stop the world I want to get off?

Doesn't matter how well you did or didn't do can a man of your intelligence seriously deny that your viewpoint was the same in the way in as it became on the way out?

Application is not the issue. They have become less and less effective or enforceable over the years and apps will make them completely obsolete. As you have demonstrated.

No it doesn't. You hail a Get taxi cab wherever you like and don't know whether it will be from Edinburgh or Ecclefechan till it turns up. And then as the average punter who doesn't know an Edinburgh plate from a crayon rubbing, you wouldn't know the tariff till you got out. And even then. Customer choice don't make me laugh!

So ...

For your own protection! It's not the disgruntled taxi driver who is setting the boundaries, he is the fettered one!

Listen, I am very open about my point of view concerning the taxi trade but that’s where it ends. I have no skewed perspective when it comes to the impact of modern technology on old business models the taxi trade has operated for a very long time. In fact, I’ve been predicting the end of these bowling club committee type companies for years. It is inevitable when you consider their only way of staying in business is to hike radio dues to buy work. I’m only surprised they’ve lasted this long.

So why does this have to be a bad thing? It creates a level playing field for all concerned the punters included. :-|

So ...

I did say in a previous post that all these problems can be ironed out with a simple change to the software. If I am in Edinburgh and I want an East Lothian Taxi to take me home then it is my choice, exactly as it is now. :-|

Don’t be daft there are no real boundaries not even now. You can’t stop a customer from choosing a taxi from his home area. If I want an East Lothian Taxi I phone one up or hopefully I use my app. Oh and my Get Taxi app allows me to hail an Edinburgh Taxi to my house at this very moment. =D>

I think your parochial view is warping your perspective of what is, in fact, a global technology platform. The days of the street corner taxi/ph shop is coming to an end, especially if you depend on hiked radio dues to buy the work to stay in business. :-|

What you seem to be looking for is a protected market in which to survive?

It's a no brainer Cabhappy :-|

Considered and informed opinion is always welcome in any debate!

Anyway Skull.

Taxi booking offices, committee run or otherwise we agree. Days are numbered?
Radio dues! That gravy train is soon to be derailed. So let's drop that.

And you are right apps can be easily adjusted to iron out whatever is in the way.

The debate is where are apps taking us?

Or do we take the bull by the bollocks and use the apps to get where we want to be?

I made this point on another thread:

Quote:
City Cabs and CRT should have merged years ago with professional people brought in to run a new company free from committee interference. One company with approximately 1000 cabs, a call centre and a single app technology just waiting to give the big boys a run for their money. Oh and no buying the work through the hiking of radio dues or paying committeemen big salaries to punish drivers or to sit in an office and drink coffee. #-o

Really, it's up to the drivers to to negotiate their own value and conditions of employment. Personally, I don't think they can do it because for the most part, they are about as bright as a bag of bricks. eusasmiles.zip
