We decided to do an oil and filter change on one of the 58 plate Ford Focus cars that we bought just before Christmas. No problem changing the oil and filter, no problem changing the air filter. The fuel filter was easy to change. However, starting the car after changing the filter.....$%^&*(^&%$£". We have tried everything but the damn thing will not start. I think we will tow it to Ford tomorrow and get them to sort it!!!

Have you no breakdown cover ?
I know my m8 use to phone the AA after changing his fuel filter on his Transit, he used them a few times over the years for the same issue, they get it going.

Mondeo tdci is a pain in the jacksie as well,

top tip we use a cheapo oil suction pump to pull the fuel up after popping the fuel line off in the engine bay after changing the filter, after that 10 seconds it fires into life, or you can do it how I normally and spray brake clean into the inlet and get it started that way, should run on its own within 20 seconds of firing up on brake clean

On some of the Transits you had to switch the ignition to the II position on and off 7 or 8 times for a few seconds each time without starting it and that would activate the fuel pump into self priming the system. Don't know if that would work on a focus though.

Unfortunately it is a mechanical fuel pump. The workshop manual describes the kit that is needed and how to do it. I have borrowed the kit but it still hasn't worked. I will try the "easy start" method later before giving up.

Take the air box off and keep spraying some brake and clutch cleaner while the ignition is being turned on. It'll take some time but that's how you get them started after you've changed the fuel filter. It takes some time but it'll start up after a few goes.

It never let me down in my last life as a Diesel service engineer (makers Man)

Cat engines can be a real Pig to start after a overhaul :) :)

If yours is the paper element type like my E7 was, my mechanic used to take the element out, use a suction pump to empty the filter housing and wipe it clean. He then half filled the housing with injector cleaner and replaced the filter and topped it up with fresh diesel before putting the top back on. It always fired up straight away ( didn't even have to use the primer) it certainly cleared the injectors. My vito has the complete canister type of filter now so he just fills this up with injector cleaner using a little primer pump contraption he's made up. Again, starts first time.

I changed the fuel filter myself on the Mondeo, always filling the new filter with diesel before fitting it, a few churns and she always started

The new engines are a pig to get started, even trying to find the filter is a task, it's at the rear of the motor underneath the fuel tank.
