Taxi Driver Online

Cab failed test today.


There is a judder come from steering the cab in any direction. It's more notchey than a judder. When I turn the steering with the engine on, I get a prominent notchey and loud grinding noise through the wheel. When the engine is off I can feel the roughness.

Anyone have any ideas?

I think it might be the centre bearing??

Took Top ball joints off their knuckles and swung the steering round with them both disconnected and still the shimmy is still there

Do you think the box is away or needs bled?

Took the top balljoint that sits in the top arm out of the hub and spun it on the bottom ball joints with all the track rods connected. Still there.

Shimmy is that every time I turn it lock to lock I get a juddering through the wheel and the hub. Even with the motor jacked up and the wheels off.

Does it have power steering? If so you could have a fluid leak. If not I don't know.

Top ball joints.......have a habit of seizing up...making steering tight and noisy.
Idler arm....seizes......making steering tight and non-returning..
collapsible steering link arm.....excessive play..
steering judder.....loss of fluid..or..faulty pump..or leaks on pipes or fanbelt loose

I am going to give the box a bleed and see how i get on. If its still there then its off to the garage.

It also failed on the idler arm having excessive play. Bought a new and fitted it. Took it back to the cab office and it failed again with the same, on a brand new part!

Sure I'm stating the obvious but are the belts tight,power steering and fan ? Does it have any "blank spots " in the steering ? By what your describing I'd guess at the steering box on its way out .

It would be nice to see what garage say's

Got a few compliance stuff done in the meantime.

Handbrake is now bedded in after new drums, shoes, cable and adjusters. Remind me never to change them on the run up to a test. Idler arm is all ok now and fitted.

It's booked in tomorrow to find the judder and an oil leak from the oil cooler area, there's a sheared bolt in there, I'm not confident drilling about near the block etc.

I'll let you all know what it is that's causing the judder.

By the way. Bled the box and some air came out. Not a lot and still not a difference.

They are self bleeding.

Just out of curiosity what's the bleed nipple for then?
