Should the railways be Nationalised?

On 1 September 2014, Network Rail was reclassified as a central government body, adding around £34 billion to public sector net debt. Can somebody please explain this to me because the way I've read it is we've just acquired a debt that we never had :?

newtwork rail is responsible to the maintenance - they were never going to make money for the private sector - they were always effectively a public liability, whist the train operating companies are free to make a killing - they are also subsidised btw

So we've gone from it being a not for profit personal guarantee company which wasn't owned by the public to a burden on the tax payer that isn't owned by the public :?

So it would seem, never did think it should have been privatised, nothing we depended on should have been privatised IMO

Yes we have that too in the back of beyond but you never really own it, it's a leasehold and my understanding is you can only ever purchase up to 75% of the property. It's also something that housing associations do to help people own their own homes it's not something that is being forced upon them.

You can buy 100% here and it is freehold. It depends if it is a house or a flat I suppose. With a flat it would be very difficult to buy the freehold if you only have a part of the building.

Quite right it's only the first purchase of a share you can only buy up to 75% after that you can buy the rest. The beauty of this scheme is if the owner wishes to sell once they acquire 100% of the shares is the housing association have the right to first refusal up to 21 years after you purchased, the other thing is housing associations tend to increase their stock rather than diminish it. So in answer to the question "What do you suggest" I suggest that if councils operate a right to buy they should have to use the money from it to build more homes
