this is new to me, is it happening in your area?

Took a young couple to their home, they went in the house to get the fare. Didn't come out again, despite banging on door. Feeling peeved, I called the police, who arrived after twenty minutes. They arrested the male, on another matter. The officer called me later and asked if the miscreant was to offer to pay the fare, plus time added for waiting, would I settle. I agreed, and he paid the police, and the police paid me. So, as I see it, a happy ending for me. If it had gone to court a fine and compensation, and I would never have been paid.

It worked for me, but is it throughout the country?

Police were very helpful, and it does save them court time.

They aren't bad round here since I furnished them with a copy of the theft act.

I had a job like yours a few years ago where the passenger went into the house and didn't come back out. I had CCTV footage of him doing so. I ripped a copy off and went to the Police who went out and arrested him the next day.

A few days later they phoned me up and said he's willing to pay will you accept it with restorative justice? I said, "has it got legs in court" because he's getting away scott free? The copper said, "everything has got legs in court."

Off to court he went and was fined £100 with £40 costs and £40 to me which wasn't bad as the original job was only £21.

The guy in the below article was in court for stealing a £3 sausage role.

Pretty much the same round here. Police arrive and it's 'pay up or you're nicked'.
Sometimes you have to remind plod of the theft act and ask if they made off from tesco without paying for a tin of beans would the police do nothing, but usually they can't be bothered with all the paperwork so deal with it on the spot.

The police nationally are meant to be doing this.

That's not how I view it at all. At the end of the day, I got paid for my time and trouble. Had the case gone to court, even had I been awarded compensation, I wouldn't get anything unless the defendant had paid up. If he asked for time to pay, ( at say £2 a week ) I would only be paid if he paid the court. I got my money, and I have an elephants memory when it comes to recognising a non payer, going back thirty years. I'd rather have restorative justice than being drip fed what I am owed.
