Cabbies slam council's taxi fare increases

NEW higher fares could ruin the taxi trade and leave customers feeling robbed, say drivers at one of the city’s biggest cab firms.

Wiltshire Council has just standardised all the county’s taxi tariffs, bringing in higher night-time rates and charges for journeys with more than four passengers.

At an emergency meeting, drivers from On-Line City Cabs agreed the change would lose them customers and destroy their night-time business.

And they say it could encourage people to drink-drive or walk home late at night, putting vulnerable people in danger.

Until May 7 there was a day rate (6am to 10pm), a night and Sunday rate (10pm to 6am), and one for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

A cab to Tidworth from the city centre used to cost £30 during the day and £50 at night.

Now the same journey for five passengers will cost £50 in the day, £72 between 10pm and 2.30am, and £96 between 2.30am and 6am — almost double what it used to cost.

The rates will stay the same for four or fewer passengers during the day and before 2.30am.

But some firms, including On-Line City Cabs and Value Cars, have agreed to charge only the lower rates.

On-Line City Cabs operations manager Paul Humphries said: “The night-time tariff after 2.30am and for more than four passengers is potentially going to ruin the taxi trade, discourage people from coming into our city and make the passengers that do travel feel like they have been legally robbed.”

Value Cars boss Scott Woodford said it was “very clear” Salisbury cab drivers did not want to increase fares and his firm would not put up its prices.

“The new rate means some taxi journeys will be too expensive and the fear is that people will simply stop coming into Salisbury,” he said.

The council says the new system will help passengers know the maximum they can be charged, wherever they are in the county.

It says it consulted drivers countywide and the changes were agreed at a licensing committee.

Owner of The Chapel nightclub Amanda Newbery said: “It’s unfair on our customers who are out for a good night and don’t expect to be stung with these extortionate fees.”

Amanda advised her customers to pre-book taxis home and said she was working with responsible cab firms to find a way around the system.

Salisbury has the ninth most expensive taxi fares in Britain at £7 for two miles on the basic rate.

Were there many people in Tidworth having a night out in the city centre at £100 a pop for a return taxi fare ?

If they are truly that concerned then the disgruntled cabbies could advertise and offer a 25% Skipscount.

Scenario:

A regular passenger, an OAP, gets in to your Sherbet. You set off and engage the meter. An accident occurs in front of you and the traffic stops. The meter charges "waiting". When you eventually get to the destination the usual fare of about £7.00 is now reading £12.00 on the meter. Now, should I demand the £12.00 and call the Police if it is not paid? Should I discount to £7.00 on the grounds that this would be morally correct? If I do the morally correct thing, should I lose my licence for LIFE?

Bottom line, you can't stop discounting. If you think you can, you "need your lumps felt."

Dear Mr fish naturally all legislation would carry within it prargraphs explaining allowable variations to such legislation .........jasus does the obvious always have to be explained to YOU...................not everything is black and white #-o

In the circumstace you outline yes you should ONLY charge the normal fare ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but not BELOW IT ............GOT IT NOW =D>

Nightclub boss takes on higher taxi tariffs

A NIGHTCLUB boss personally challenged taxi drivers charging new higher tariffs outside her venue on one of the busiest nights of the year.

Chapel co-owner Amanda Newbery spent four hours overnight on Saturday directing her customers to drivers using Tariff 2 rather than the higher Tariff 3.

The new rates come after Wiltshire Council increased maximum fares in the city, with some drivers opting to cash in.

Amanda said: “That rate was what used to be reserved for New Year’s Eve. To charge the higher rate to unsuspecting customers is quite wrong.

“We had a member of staff who suddenly found her trip home cost more than her night’s pay.”

Some drivers objected strongly to Amanda’s approach and one complained to the police.

Inspector David Minty said: “I was approached by a taxi driver who told me he didn’t think it was correct and I advised him it wasn’t a police matter.

“All [Amanda] was doing was telling her punters which cars were charging the higher rate.”

Later on Sunday, more drivers agreed to revert to Tariff 2 for late nights, which matched the rate charged by what Amanda called “the responsible taxi firms”.

She said companies like Value Cars and On-Line City Cabs had led the way in showing what was right, adding: “A continued high fare will kill the late economy in this city. It is unfair on people who already have squeezed budgets.”

She said: “Some taxi drivers were simply profiteering on the back of a thoughtless rise in tariffs imposed by Wiltshire Council, making us the seventh highest for taxi fares in the country.”

Value Cars boss Scott Woodford and On-Line City Cabs manager Paul Humphries confirmed they would stick to the old tariffs.

Mr Woodford said: “In some cases they are almost double the fare they were originally.

“We weren’t in favour of increasing the tariffs and we told Wiltshire Council we were dead against it.

“Our concern is it’s going to scare away the night trade.”

He added: “I think it’s really good that businesses are working together to make sure everybody doesn’t get overcharged and has a good night.”

Mr Humphries said: “As a company, On-Line City Cabs were glad to see the majority of taxi drivers have also decided not to charge the new tariffs.

“As much as we want to give our customers the best value for money possible, we also want to work as part of a team with all the other drivers and show that taxi drivers in Salisbury do care about what the public think of us.”

Some firms will be offering fixed fares from Salisbury to destinations outside the city based on the lower rates.

It is believed taxi firm All The Sevens is also sticking to the old tariffs.

The council brought in the changes on May 7 in a bid to standardise fares across the county.

Until May 7 there were three rates in Salisbury: day, night, and Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Under the changes, there will be another higher rate for between 2.30am and 6am, and two more rates for journeys with more than four passengers.

The highest rate, Tariff 5, costs £6 minimum plus another £6 a mile after that, with a 60p per minute waiting time.

How much do you charge for admission to the club? Will you be reducing this to help the people on tight budgets? How much are your drinks? Are they the same as the pubs or are you profiteering on a captive market?

Was thinking that

I wonder how she'd like it if cabbies stood outside her place earlier in the evening, telling her punters that the place down the road was cheaper.

Most punters think that Taxis run on normal car insurance and they only have a normal MOT each year. Turbomongs.
