Oi, spamming on here is just not cricket. You are continually ADVERTISING the trade unions and yet you demonstrate no recent benefits of belonging to them outside of London. My daughter who works in the offices of Tesco is about to made redundant, Morrisons have recently had a purge, as have Sainsbury, all of them being extremely wealthy companies.
The Unions once again stand by and let it happen.....their beautiful claim of a victory will be that they got them a wonderful severance package, that in reality is protected in employment law in any event. So let us take it to a level and give them (the unions) credit for a severance package - my daughter is 40 years old.......do you think that the package (we believe 5k ish) is going to last her for the rest of her working life??? Unions are absolute sh!t.....I would not give them the time of day.[/quote]
Spamming wtf you on about i just express an opinion
A Union is only as good as its membership if your daughter is unhappy with her situation theres every reason for her workmates to initiate a Strike against imposed redundancy, of course that will have to be within the Law on redundancy's.
A union's officials will never initiate industrial action if the membership will not support it, common sense and of course, all Strikes are subject to serious balloting procedures.
The severance package agreement will of course have been agreed on by ballot by the membership or at a meeting by a show of hands, unlikely but possible, so did your Daughter vote on that agreement either by ballot or show of hands ? and did she agree to its terms and conditions ?
£5000 is of course peanuts but of course redundancy payments are opposed by the Tory's but i believe subject to Eu regulations.
morrisons and sainsbury's so whats the level of Union membership within these companys ? very likely less than 30% hardly a position of strength is it, given that you get 30% out on strike the remaining 70% scab on them so naturally the company will get its way, not exactly rocket science is it ? reverse those figures and you the membership win every time again hardly rocket science? Its all about numbers and members involvement they dont bother to attend meetings formulate policy's and cry when it all goes tits up!Or even worse they dont join any Union and they get absolutely mullerd evry time and the finest example of that is The Hack and PH industry's
the least money for the most hours in any industry in this Country. The other example of course in the RMT Tube Drivers in London 80% membership ACTIVE members £70000 a year for a 37.5 hour week [shift work weekend's included] full sick pay 8 weeks holidays.
So theres the 2 extremes of course somewhere in the middle are Council workers reasonable pay and T' and C's high Union membership, Car workers for Peugoet Jaguar Ford Vauxhall etc again reasonable pay and T's and C's.Achieved BY high Union membership
Obviously its your choice John in my opinion the evidence is overwhelming Union membership works for sure it could be better but of course the members elect the officers and if they elect mugs they get mugged off. of course they can always stand themselves as could your daughter have done!
I aint selling a product just my philosophy on life aquired over 54 years as a worker.
I sympathise with your daughter its a cruel world but the cruelty can be prevented in my opinion by Solid Militant trade Union organisation and i have given you examples of that..........................agree or not at least i have made the effort to without my normal provocation to present my view .
This thread was about a Driver at serious risk of Bankruptcy, homelessness. and all that goes with it my comments advice were aimed at assisting him and others that could possibly arrive in a similar situation, there was no other motivation.

Thank you a good post.
My frustration with the unions stems from the fact that years ago it was an "All for one and one for all mentality", in other words as much as it disrupted the economy (oh and the economy was in better shape then than now) other trades came out in sympathy. By coming out in sympathy was how the trade Union movement grew, it would not matter that say Tesco,Morrison,Sainsbury had say only a 30% membership because the strength was in the overall membership i.e the TUC.
Today they (the unions) stand by and watch year upon year their powers being stripped away (another one about to be imposed).

Agreed, but leadership and experience has got to come from within - There is overall no real leadership for the workforce, what you do have is guys at the top of the tree keeping the peace and taking a fat salary + perks to smooth troubled waters.
Trade unions will/can only ever return to where they were if we ever had a war (god forbid) or some revolution. I respect your beliefs, but for me when you have Unions with as you mention maybe 30% membership in a workforce and that 30% cannot bring that company to a stop - then something is wrong.
Think about what I am saying; 30% Tesco, 30% Morrisons, 30% Sainsbury etc consisting of Lorry drivers, shelf stackers, till girls, office girls etc etc....I tell you what, if the unions were doing their jobs properly it could still be done if they brought the lot together.
Hmmm what is the one word you consistently use......
Organise! Cheers for your input.[/quote]
your welcome John
Lets just cover a couple of your points [all for one and one for all] SOLIDARITY yes the right way to do it I Stopped Publication of the Torygraph on behalf of the nurses. Rather than have them going out we did it, naturally it was all covered up and hidden now in the mists of time, However the Torys bloody soon learnt their lesson and Thatcher made all such actions [called secondary action illegal] naturally Blair and his new Labour parasites refused to reverse that legislation, and the only party i have heard demanding its repeal is your Welsh Nats and good for them! So until that legislation is repealed the Unions are ham strung! The TUc have been demanding it for years !
As regards Sainsburys etc Union membership is mainly concentrated in the Transport section, which of course is an extremely for Sainsburys a vulnerable area, empty shelves equals loss of business. so the lorry Drivers at Sainsburys and indeed ASDA where membership is high generally do OK. So 30% in the right AREA CAN BE VERY PRODUCTIVE but of course the lorry Drivers cannot legally take industrial action on behalf of the Counter staff or vice a versa, unless of course you can somehow combine the Dispute, which is extremely difficult.
As regards your daughters predicament i hope she has been through the full CONSULTATION PROCEDURE which can with a bit of skill be stretched out to around 6 months.Remember this company were recently fined for illegal accounting procedures and incurred a loss in excess of a billion pounds, in response to that the CEO was dismissed and a new regime installed, his first actions was to close in excess of 20 stores involving i believe 10000 redundancies. Therefore i believe your daughter is in an awful predicament and believe me she has my sympathy, but if her office store is not being closed then there could be a result for her out of the consultation procedure, lets hope so, much will depend on her time in the post being deemed redundant.
Take note Tesco employ extremely competent human resources staff highly skilled at cheating in my opinion their staff in such situations. I hope her Union are on the ball for her !
Some points on Tesco i had a relative working in their Head Office where the regime was vigorously anti Union and the workers were treated with contempt and they stood for it sackings down grading redundancys all part of the enviroment, They eventually had him out aged 60 to be fair on a not too bad a pension, but the continuous stress and strain of that working enviroment had a catastrophic effect on his health.nice people Tesco's!
Look if people stand aside from the Unions and fail to participate ie add their input into reforming them it will obviously take longer , and of course they do need reforming made more militant democratic effective as you point out, and when thats achieved maybe the case of this Driver or your daughter will be just distant memories of the bad old days.
Anyway should you like some more detailed advice for your daughter PM me your phone number and maybe i could assist, which i would be pleased to do. i would PM you my number but my computer skills are zero.
