Not being funny here but do the police down there do nothing but chase UBER drivers?

I suspect the Inspector has been pressurised into doing something by the firm that operates the taxi/PH service there.

A token, and IMO pointless, effort.

Looking at the new posts today on Gatwick Police's Twitter page, they claim that Tesco (for those who don't know the area, there's a Tesco Extra store in Hookwood, immediately north to Gatwick Airport) managers are going to get staff to move on drivers.

I find it hard to believe that Tesco will be moving on potential/existing customers, who are using their large car park (and there's always plenty of spaces) to move on. Even if there are drivers waiting there for a job, chances are that they're going to go inside to buy something, do their shopping, buy their fuel etc.

There are 100s of spaces around that area that drivers can park up on the public road, outside of Tescos and airport land.

The police are making themselves look rather daft.

I drop off at Gatwick dozens of times a month, and pick a fair few up, and I have never had an issue with anyone up there, including the good people from MacDonalds.

Every time I visit MacDonalds car park it is chock a block full of taxis and PH from across the country, and they never seem to have a problem.

I also disagree with your view about a touting definition, in that you say if you don't approach a punter you are not touting.

If a punter approaches you then a case for illegally 'plying for hire' could be made out without you saying or doing anything.

That's case law.
