VIDEO: Furious Rotherham taxi drivers threaten strike action over new regulations in wake of abuse scandal

More than 100 furious Rotherham taxi drivers have threatened strike action over new regulations designed to combat child sexual exploitation.

A demonstration was held outside Rotherham Town Hall this afternoon, as Commissioner Mary Ney confirmed her intention to introduce the new policy from July 6.

The new licensing regime will require all drivers to install CCTV into their vehicles in the next three months.

They will also have to demonstrate they are a ‘fit and proper person’ to hold a licence, with licence holders needing to have a BTEC qualification and a satisfactory level of English.

The shake-up comes after the Jay report revealed the ‘prominent role’ of Rotherham taxi drivers in the abuse of children, while the follow-up Casey inquiry said Rotherham Council needed to ‘get their house in order and regulate taxis effectively’ due to the ‘well-publicised link between taxis and child sexual exploitation in Rotherham that has cast a long shadow over the vast majority of law-abiding drivers’.

But angry drivers said they are being made a ‘scapegoat’ for the town’s grooming scandal.

Their demonstration followed an evening of strike action on Saturday night ahead of the decision.

Driver Gulam Yasseen told the crowd: “I have been disgusted and shocked by the child sexual exploitation cases in our town. Like all of you, I would never defend any criminal who is guilty of this heinous crime.

“These cases we have heard about go back 10 or 20 years. This is shocking. I didn’t tell Rotherham Council or the police not to do their jobs.

“These young girls are like my own daughters and it is a shame that the council and police let them, and all of us, down.”

But Commissioner Ney said the changes are designed to restore public faith in the town’s taxi trade and should ultimately be beneficial to the drivers.

She said: “The taxi trade has a poor reputation because of a few people. The council’s taxi licensing service has also been in disrepute.

“We have got to get both sides up to standard and we needed a new policy so people can have confidence in both.”

She said some changes have been made following consultation with drivers, including scrapping plans for cabs to be certain colours.

The policy will be evaluated after a year to see if the changes have been effective.

It follows five licences being revoked from drivers in the town following information being provided from the police concerning investigations related to child sexual exploitation.

Just a thought....do these cams automatically come on when a car/cab is started.....or can you turn them on and off at will?

Down to you, or your licensing officers.

Typically they start when you turn the ignition on, although some can have a 5/10 minute delay, so it still records when you turn the ignition off.

You can have a switch fitted, but generally only those with something to hide have them. [-X

Very much as I thought. So an out and out perv has only got to say "I forgot to turn it on Or I was not working Or I had finished my shift".......and you still have no evidence! Yes I know that it would look suspicious, unfortunately suspicion will not be enough for convictions, neither will it stop it.

All this hoo haa re CCTV is no more than lip service - the root causes are not being addressed i.e foreign CRB/lack of checks are still a joke, and so are the LA's for treating the trade with contempt.

Tbh those with an on/off switch would not necessarily have them "with something to hide"! Many will use their vehicles for private family use.....who is going to record their own privacy?

It wouldn't bother me if my personal driving was recorded or my 'private' time in my vehicle. I've waited five years I could wait another 5 mins for it to switch itself off

Who is going to see it? Who wants to see it?

The 'privacy' issue is mentioned time and time again, but the data is yours, no-one else's.

Only a proper request from the police or the council, and in some cases the taxi operator, can be accessed, otherwise it's illegal.

And do you really think the above give a monkeys about your private family life?

Rotherham taxi drivers warned demonstrations are ‘counter-productive’

Rotherham taxi drivers have been warned demonstrations against contentious new licensing laws designed to combat child sexual exploitation will prove ‘counter-productive’.

Council leader Chris Read said the new measures are designed to restore public confidence in the town’s taxi trade after it was implicated - along with the council and the police - in the grooming scandal.

It comes as unhappy drivers took action this week in a last-ditch bid to stop the currently-proposed measures, which include installing CCTV in all taxis, going through.

Coun Read said: “We need to ensure that the service is safe, and that members of the public are able to start rebuilding their trust and confidence in the local taxi industry.

“Any level of disruption to the public is therefore regrettable and likely to prove counter-productive in this regard.

“The new policy - developed after months of consultation - is an important step towards ensuring the highest standards.”

Mr Read’s comments come ahead of a meeting between council bosses and taxi drivers on Monday to discuss the ‘finer detail’ of the new policy as it comes into force.

Drivers will be expected to install CCTV in their vehicles and pass a ‘fit and proper’ person test, as well as meeting new standards on the condition and age of their vehicles.

Licence holders will need to have a BTEC qualification and a satisfactory level of English.

Rotherham Council say the measures will improve the reputation of the town’s taxi trade after it was linked to the grooming scandal.

The shake-up affecting 1,200 registered drivers comes after the Jay report revealed the ‘prominent role’ of Rotherham taxi drivers in the abuse of children, while the follow-up Casey inquiry said Rotherham Council needed to ‘get their house in order and regulate taxis effectively’ due to the ‘well-publicised link between taxis and child sexual exploitation in Rotherham that has cast a long shadow over the vast majority of law-abiding drivers’.

But more than 100 angry drivers protested outside Rotherham Town Hall earlier this week, with an informal strike involving dozens taking part in ‘go-slow’ drives through town.

Drivers say they are concerned at the potential costs of installing, maintaining and repairing the cameras, which the council say drivers should be able to hire for £5 per week or less.

Those protesting also claim they are being made ‘scapegoats’ for the grooming scandal.

Commissioner Mary Ney, who has responsibility for the council’s licensing function, said: “We have been having ongoing discussions with representatives of the trade throughout the process of drafting this new policy and have met all of their previous requests for meetings.

“We have made numerous changes in direct response to what they have told us, relating to the age and colour of vehicles for example, and we are due to meet with representatives again to discuss the finer detail of how we put the scheme in place.

“We have and will continue to listen to the views of taxi drivers – as well as all other sections of the community.
