The 33-year-old was attacked moments after his private hire Vauxhall Zafira had moved off and knocked over an 18-year-old girl.
The girl suffered serious injuries including a fractured pelvis after the 3am incident in Bolton town centre.
The Zafira had been parked outside The Bar nightclub, on Nelson Square, when, as it set off, it was involved in the collision with the girl, according to police.
Several members of the public then attacked the minicab and the driver, who suffered facial injuries during the assault. He was not arrested.
The girl was taken to hospital where she remains in a stable condition.
Now police are appealing for people who witnessed the incident at around 3.10am on Thursday to contact them.
PC Paul Terry, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “There were a lot of people in the vicinity of Nelson Square at the time of this collision and also the subsequent attack on the minicab driver.
“I have no doubt that both incidents attracted a lot of attention from people who were in the area and we are asking for anyone that saw or heard anything to come forward and speak to us. Your information could be vital to our investigation.”
