Taxi driver was nearly FOUR times over drink-drive limit SIX HOURS after being stopped by police

The 37-year-old man admitted drinking half a bottle of vodka before getting behind the wheel

A taxi driver who gave a breath test reading nearly four times over the drink-drive limit - SIX HOURS after being pulled over by police - has been disqualified from driving for three years.

Gregory Vaughan Winterton, 37, of Russell Court, Blackwater, appeared at Guildford Magistrates' Court on Tuesday (July 7) charged with drink-driving.

Surrey Police said he was stopped in Smart's Heath Road in the Mayford area of Woking on June 19 at 3.40pm.

A roadside breath test gave a reading so high that he was admitted to St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey for assessment.

At Guildford police station, following his release into custody, Winterton gave a reading at 9.45pm the same day of 134mg, the legal limit being 35mg.

The reading was taken nearly six hours after he was stopped.

Police said that he admitted in interview to having drunk half a bottle of vodka before getting behind the wheel of his taxi.

Winterton was given a 20-week prison sentence suspended for a year, plus a 12-month supervision order.

He was also ordered to pay court costs of £87, a victim surcharge of £80 and a criminal court charge of £150 as well as being disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 36 months.

I worked out that if I went to the pub and drunk 10 pints between 6pm and midnight I wouldn't be below the drink drive limit until 1pm the following day !

I've had sessions where it took nearly 24 hours from stopping boozing to be clear of alcohol (only takes 15 doubles and a couple of pints).

It'd be longer than that, a pint of beer has two units of alcohol, the body takes something like two hours to process one unit of alcohol. If you stop drinking at midnight you'll still be over the limit way past 1pm.

Takes 1 hour to process 1 unit of alcohol.
10 pints = 20 units.

Start at 6pm stop at midnight consuming 20 units of alcohol in total;
Already processed 6 units 14 remaining. Drink driving limit = 3 units (approx) so 11 hours till below dd limit = 1pm. 4pm before completely free of alcohol.
