Decision on Uber taxi licence for Nottingham this week

The application for Uber will be heard on Friday

City council officials will meet on Friday to discuss whether Uber should be given a licence to run its taxi service in Nottingham.

The controversial mobile app connects people looking for a car with the nearest available private hire licensed driver.

But black-cab drivers in other cities have claimed it is damaging their businesses.

An application for a private hire operators licence will be heard by the regulatory and appeals committee of the council on Friday morning.

In documents released by the council, it said: "The power to determine applications for such licences is delegated to officers. However, in this instance, due to the nature of the proposed business and the sensitivities around it, it is felt more appropriate for the application to be considered by the regulatory and appeals committee."

Wouldn't it be simpler if the Operators licence had to be held by the Vehicle owners..whether they be fleet sized or Single car owners, wouldn't that curtail Ubers ambitions, they would then need to buy all the vehicles they use and employ drivers which in turn would make a mockery of their 10% booking fee as they would be playing on the same level playing field as the rest of us.

I'm sure apps have their place, god knows theres plenty of them about these days.

If you sell beer or sprits you need a licence, you'd never get a licence which allows you to take Card payment for the drink, contact the nearest pub and have the local pub deliver the drink to your door.

Nope..the Licence holder should be the owner of what ever licence regulated Product they sell.

Your answer is that every private hire car owner has to have their own operators license. There are many drivers who would not agree with you on that one.
As for delivering beer and spirits. We have a chap here who is licensed to take your order over the phone and accept credit/debit card payments and then deliver the beer and spirits to your door.

Why can't it be incorporated into their driver's license?

Make life so much easier.

Jamil Ahmed: Arrival of Uber will make a bad situation worse

Jamil Ahmed, chairman of the Nottingham Licensed Taxi Owners and Drivers Association – which represents Hackney cab drivers – says the introduction of Uber will make a bad situation worse.

We are disappointed that Uber seems likely to be given a licence to operate in Nottingham, because the city is already out of control in terms of taxis in our city centre. The situation is already bad, and another operator with more vehicles will only make it worse.

Although Uber will take some vehicles away from existing private hire companies, I do think there could be an increase in the number of vehicles in the city centre. This is likely to be an issue at Uber's offices, as more people will attract more rogue taxis. It's very difficult for people who go into the city centre to walk to a taxi rank through our unpredictable harsh weather, when there are so many rogue unbooked/uninsured taxis waiting outside the pub/bar/hotel/night clubs.

In terms of our trade, the amount of work already stolen from Hackney carriages is such that the amount we lose to Uber will be next to nothing.

This is about the safety of young people who are coming into the city. We are told at the moment by the private hire companies that all their vehicles are booked, and yet they illegally ply for hire outside nightclubs, and people jump into them.

It's frustrating that the police and city council don't seem to have the will or the staffing to stop our sons and daughters being put at risk. We live in a civilised country, so how can the situation be so bad? The city council should be doing more to control the situation.

They shouldn't cherry pick then Uber wouldn't think there's a need for their App in Nottingham. They've done their homework so there's a need for Uber in Nottingham.

So if it's just about cherry picking why do they think there is a need for Uber in Sefton?

I was on about Nottingham, the green London Taxi cherry pick where they want to go to.

Uber given new taxi licence despite hostility

A taxi-hailing app that has faced fierce and sometimes violent opposition in parts of the world has been given a licence to operate in Nottingham.

The app, called Uber, has angered some traditional taxi drivers, who complain of unfair competition.

Nottingham City Council granted the licence after questioning Uber representatives for two hours.

Uber has not set a launch date but said it was "excited" to bring its service to Nottingham.

"Uber not only enables riders to get about town cost-effectively and safely, it also enables drivers who partner with us to become their own boss and choose when they drive," a statement said.

Uber has been operating in the UK since summer 2012, when it was introduced in London.

Licences have since been granted in Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Newcastle, Sheffield and Bristol.

But Uber is facing legal action by the GMB union over claims it is failing to provide basic rights to its drivers.

Black-cab drivers in London have also started a poster campaign against the service.

Last year, thousands of taxi drivers brought part of central London to a standstill in protest, and there have been further demonstrations in Canada, France, Hong Kong, India, South Africa and the US.

The firm has had to provide security to protect its drivers in South Africa after threats from traditional drivers.

Private hire firms argued that Nottingham is "already out of control in terms of taxis in our city centre" and that Uber, an international company, would take money away from the local economy.

Councillor Nick McDonald, Nottingham City Council's portfolio holder transport, said: "The council has a statutory duty to grant an application for an operating licence unless it feels the applicant is not fit for purpose."
