Illegal taxi driver fined over £1,200 for picking up fares in Nottingham

A rogue taxi driver has been fined over £1,200 for illegally plying for hire in Nottingham.

Hummayun Niaz, of Alfreton Road, was caught illegally trying to pick up passengers and driving without insurance back in November 2014.

The 36-year-old appeared in court on August 13, and pleaded guilty to both offences.

As well as being given six penalty points on his license, the driver was fined £500 for plying for hire, £676.58 in costs and made to pay a £50 victim surcharge - bringing the total fine to pay to £1,226.58.

Nicola Heaton, portfolio holder for Community Services said: "It is imperative that we catch these people and bring them to justice.

"This is a strong message to others out there who think they can get away with illegally plying for hire in our city."

Earlier this month, Nottingham City Council revealed it had prosecuted 14 rogue taxi drivers over the past six months, collecting nearly £8,000 in fines.

They're red hot in Nottingham, the times I've been down on a booking I've always attracted the Council's enforcement teams. It must be my dashing good looks.

The usual place that we pick up is Oceana. You can just about guarantee that someone form enforcement will be straight over to check you out.
I have also been asked when picking up near the Castle.
I think it is a good thing that they are so hot.

The main issue they've got with us is leaving our top signs on when we are waiting for jobs, it's just on oversight on the drivers part by forgetting to turn their meters off when they park up in Nottingham waiting for their punter.
