Before Castro and Che there was Yankee rule via their plant Batista which meant

Child prostitution rampant on the streets
Poverty and starvation
no health service
slavery
murders of trade Union officials and members
absolute corruption by the Government with the Mafias involvement
no elections
no civil rights
Arrest and imprisonment without trial

And now its not exacxtly paradise thats for sure but the vast majority of population are far better off then under the previous regime !
They now have a better Health service than in the USA and its free, shortages for sure but even Obama has realised the absurdity of the Trade embargo [which of course the UK never supported} and its being stopped this year

Should there be elections of course , should family rule be challenged of course ............will it happen certainly
