Has anyone had any issues with contracts being given to Third Sector Transport operators?
It seems to be the norm here that by default all new Council and NHS work is given to a Third Sector Operator. After doing a Special Needs School Run with Escort on a trial run for 2 weeks. I was emailed on Friday and thanked for my effeciency and reliablity the lad had enjoyed using my Taxi but that a better price had been got and would would no longer be required. I was surprised as my price was keen, it was only later I found out it was Third Sector.
Any advice gratefully received.

Do you mean council own transport?

However councils have got no money, and they will act outside of the law if they can get away with it.

Find out who's doing it and for how much.

By Third Sector I mean a transport Operator that was originally set up as a charity receiving public money. To transport elderly, infirm, disabled etc to doctors, hospitals, lunch clubs, etc. All vehicles funded by charitable donations, grants from council and other funding bodies. In due course they now have a trading arm. Which competes in the open market, unfairly of course since set up and running costs are subsidised by these various funders.
I have already contacted Councillors, but feel this is insufficient as many Councillors sit on they board of Directors and support them. I have nothing against them operating in the open market like the rest of us, but unfair competition is hard to take.
It looks like work is being automatically directed towards them to justify the Councils invetment in supporting them. After all it wouldn't look if they went tits up or had to pay off drivers. Mostly who already retired on pensions and are after an easy job to top up their pot.

There is currently a big push to make the above illegal, via the EU competition regs.

There's a chap called Martin Allen of Mansfield who has been championing this very issue with the EU at Very High Level. The UK government has been issued with various letters and infringement notices which should have been replied to by now. Whilst this mostly covered the Community Transport bus sector, the same principles could and probably will be applied to the hire car sector. What is happening is illegal, I suggest you also look up the case of Glockner Ambulanz, a German case along similar lines.

I will let yo know how I get on, early days yet and still at the information gathering stage.
