They are more expensive than black cabs in Newcastle some nights. :-|

Just looking on the app - They have a "Newcastle Operators License" - I can stick my pin nearly anywhere in Gateshead and order an Uber car at the moment. Surely the application should not allow this - it should only allow bookings inside their area. (?)
Is the ruling the same for applications as it is for normal taxi offices? I realise you can book "out of town" for private hire but assumed an application like Uber should not allow you to book from outside their licensed area.
Therefore if an Uber car gets a job from Newcastle to say Carlisle and someone from Carlisle just happens to want an Uber car from that area just at the same point in time it drops off - they can actually "book" from the app because the vehicle will become "available" - even though Uber have no license anywhere in that area.

But where is the booking office, is an app booking a "call", im afraid they passenger could call Newcastle anyway, so whats wrong

The technology is moving faster than we can imagine

Might be the right time for the Newcastle black cab trade to look into forming a co-operative, I'm not sure if you said there is a total 300 black cabs in Newcastle or if there is more but a co-op of 300+ Would become significant, Cordic could provide the tech and an App that is just as good as Ubers and Gett, check it out http://www.cordic.com/smartbooker.html

Anyway good luck with your website =D>

My thoughts are the students have received codes and are passing these around to get "free Uber cars" - when these codes run out then the real picture will emerge.

They won't.

It's not hard to create multiple e-mail addresses, and sim cards can be picked up cheaply (99p or thereabouts, or free), to create multiple accounts, where if you introduce a new rider, they will get £10 (in some cases they offer £20) off their first ride, and you will also get £10/£20 credited to your account. The payment card used can easily be unlinked from an account, and moved to another.

I'm sure students, or indeed anyone can easily work that out...

Traditional "ranking" was doomed with the advent of mobile phones, plus many who dont rent a pda/radio havent the sense or aptitude to put themselves out there for public access, Ive had calls for a taxi whilst doing PDA/base work, ive pressed "flag down" and gone and done it, leaving the base to watch my track online wondering how i got that job...

There are now more mobile phones registered in the UK than people living here (and that not down to illegals)

Why would I walk to a rank when I can get a car to pick me up?

There's nowt as queer as folk. One day last week, I overheard a punter making a phone call to a ph firm, whilst stood in front of half a dozen hacks. He asked where the "taxi" was that he had ordered for 0915. He was told it had turned up, and left without him. Could you send me another? It'll be here in ten minutes, he told his friend. I went off on a job, and came back 15 minutes later. He's still stood there. Another phone call. Still waiting. And at 0950 I am front car. Another phone call, and they then climb into my cab, and ask me to take them to Lawress Hall.

Now Lawress Hall is the HMRC training college just outside of Lincoln. And when we got there, he paid the ten pound fare, and, as they all do, asked for a receipt.

So, why would he care how much it costs, if he claims it back on expenses?

And for those about to say he was saving the taxpayer money, he was not. He and his buddy wasted an hour each out of their taxpayer funded day dicking around waiting for a ph that would have been a pound cheaper.
