It is not the LA that has allowed the tariff to drop to that extent. That is the fault of the trade. Why are you not asking for a tariff review every year?
Because it's like everywhere else, you'll get some dime bar that will oppose the increase stating, "it will ruin the trade." They'll be the first one to have their meters changed over.
Right on the nail! Every other business pubs/clubs/takeaways and especially hotels have increased their prices, except the taxi trade #-o . Part of the problem is short sighted taxi drivers who see hundreds of cabs out every night and get a pitiful return during the week......are then afraid that they will earn even less. If the truth be known it is a downward spiral, with that in mind the L.A/council should take safe guards to ensure that enough income is being generated to ensure that the drivers can keep their cars/cabs up to a modern standard.

The proof being is that the 10 year rule that was in place now seems to have gone out of the window, I now see cabs out there, that are 53 plates.

Quote:
If we get that here, and we do, it goes to consultation. members of the trade are asked to put forward their proposals and then the trade vote on the proposals. The proposal with the most votes is then put forward to the Council for consideration.

Our representatives go forward with a proposal! Dragon taxis (500 cars/cabs) who are basically P.H but also have Hacks usually put forward their proposals (generally lower) - guess which one goes through? they always neglect to mention that their 5+ seaters charge a fare and one third, whereas ours is a maximum of £1 for a fifth passenger. Basically they have a slightly different tariff whereby their drivers can make more, however the Council always seem to take their side.
John...if you don't want to pick people up...then you need to get another job...........How much is your first flag......How much for the fist mile...what time if or when does it go on to tariff 2..

You are bracketing me in with the rest, all I am doing is explaining as to why it is happening. Having said that when drivers took out big loans to pay for their cabs, the tariff was a lot more attractive enabling them to earn their living properly. I guess if your/my terms change drastically (and they have) then your first duty is to look after your dependents. I feel that your reply is very much on the lines of political rhetoric "if you don't want to pick people up...then you need to get another job." the same sort of reply that the nurses get - sorry but just not acceptable.

The tariff is...........

HACKNEY CARRIAGE TARIFF LOCAL GOVERNMENT (MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS) ACT 1976 AUTHORISED FARE TARIFF

First 103 yards (94.18metres) or Part thereof, £2.00

If distance exceeds 103 yards (94.18m) for first 103 yards (94.18m) £2.00

For each subsequent 207 yards (189.28m) £0.20

WAITING TIME
For each period of 48 seconds
£0.20

EXTRA CHARGES
For hirings between midnight and 6.0 am and on Sundays, and Bank Holidays £1.00

and between 8.0 pm New Years Eve and 6.0 am 2nd January £3.00

For each passenger exceeding four £1.00 each
For bicycles, cabin trunks (minimum size 36” x 24”x 18”) and items of furniture £0.50 each

THE EXTRA CHARGE FOR NIGHT TIME, SUNDAYS AND BANK HOLIDAYS WILL NOT
APPLY WHEN EXTRA CHARGE FOR CHRISTMAS AND THE NEW YEAR APPLIES.

CONTAMINATION
For the fouling of a vehicle
£50.00

On all journeys within the boundary of the City and County of Cardiff the driver
must use the meter which must not exceed the authorised fare scale shown
above.

and in respect of which no fare or rate of fare was
agreed before the hiring was effected, must not exceed the authorised fare scale as shown above.

COMPLAINTS REGARDING FARES, VEHICLES OR DRIVERS SHOULD BE MADE TO
THE LICENSING SECTION, CITY HALL, CARDIFF, 029 2087

Well done Mr T......lets all jump on the band wagon and react to alcoholic ravings of the lemmings. #-o #-o #-o

The Council are acting totally irresponsible by telling everyone "Take an image - and report"! Okay so they take an image and report....what exactly does that prove?

You are bracketing me in with the rest, all I am doing is explaining as to why it is happening. Having said that when drivers took out big loans to pay for their cabs, the tariff was a lot more attractive enabling them to earn their living properly. I guess if your/my terms change drastically (and they have) then your first duty is to look after your dependents. I feel that your reply is very much on the lines of political rhetoric "if you don't want to pick people up...then you need to get another job." the same sort of reply that the nurses get - sorry but just not acceptable.

The tariff is...........

For bicycles, cabin trunks (minimum size 36” x 24”x 18”) and items of furniture £0.50 each

You are missing the point completely! All this crap about doing the job properly pales into insignificance if your income has been cut by OVER half i.e 450 licenses now 967 (courtesy of the Council) that in actual fact translates into roughly 3102 extra passenger seats based on an average of 6 seats per WAV, or if you like an additional 775 saloon cars on the road + no real rise in 7 years, also then take into account the so called recession = all in all a massive reduction in income. The guys are struggling to make a living, to then say yes I know all of this........but you have to play by the rules is complete b*ll*cks.

In order to do the job properly you have to have the tools otherwise you do not stay in business, (we have had the tools taken off of us). Putting it finely! it is a case of bending the broken rules to stay in business, as for getting rid of "get rid of the £1 after midnight...go for clock and a quarter...after 11pm." ...do you really think that it is that simple having not had a decent raise in 7 years.

Just remember this; The hotels in Cardiff for the world cup increased their room rates in some cases by over 1000% (the zeroes are not a typing mistake) = hardly a ripple about that one, Wetherspoons hiked up their prices = no mention of that either, you then have some drivers doing a bit of cherry picking = all hell breaks loose. If you expect me on the back of serious erosion of income of the drivers by the L.A to condemn the drivers...then think again as we are being f*%ked over time and time again. You have some other silly sod ( a Cardiff driver ) saying that it does go on, and many a time he has taken them home for free! For the do gooders he is a hero with THEM wishing there was more like him, Or is he a mug!!! I say mug, because we all know that the public will take advantage of people like that, the reason being is that we are in a dirty game with people willing to slag us off and take advantage for all sorts of reasons.

You need to read those comments that you posted, and read them properly! It is lemming posting with all and sundry jumping on the band wagon. One silly girl stated that her night ended at 2.00 a.m, she then asked 12 taxis to take her home! at that time of night there would have been 100+ cars/cabs parked up here there and everywhere (but asked only 12) she then went on to say that this happened every week! she also went onto say that she had to walk home through a dodgy area (every week), and that it was a 20 minute walk that got her home after 3.00 a.m then adding that it was more like 4.00 a.m ! So this is the scenario that you are sucking on;

1. This apparently happens to her EVERY week.
2. She has a 20 minute walk through a dodgy area EVERY week.
3. This 20 minute walk takes her anything between 1 to 2 hours!!!!!!!!!!!
4. You as an experienced man of the trade are giving as already mentioned the kind of spiel that Gov people give our Nurses........no doubt you will be soon saying - it is not the money...its a vocation!

When they give us the tools to do the job properly I will condemn......until then!!

Pick the excuse that you want.

The LA wont allow it.
or
The companys wont allow it.
or
The drivers think it will kill the trade.

Maybe the list can be expanded but these 3 will do for starters.

That would go nowhere near to solving the problem.

The City centre has a number of (close by) Hotels/Guest houses and thousands of houses/flats/apartments. In essence it would mean a reduction of income as many are in range of less than £4. Without being critical of the proposals, you have to know the layout/terrain, as ever those who are suggesting (in good faith) will only be able to see it in the vein that works for them.

John, I was a trade rep in Sefton for many years and had to deal with lots and lots of drivers who thought that getting a hackney drivers's licence and a cab, was all they needed to do to go out and make money. They thought people would just walk up to them, jump in the cab and off they'd go raking it in. They wouldn't have to do anything else it was all there for them. Sorry, that's not the way it works.

Sefton was deregged 25 yrs ago and we had cabs following each other down the road with their for hire lights on. and I was driving one of them. Wasn't nice at all. Long, long hours for very little money and the Council were no help at all, and yet the private hire were expanding, so it was a time when the trade had to stop working as individuals, so associations were formed. Drivers and fleet owners, both sides of the borough, north and south. It took a great deal of time energy and work to form these into one that would work together and unanimously submit a new working concept to provide a better hackney service for the public of Sefton. Eventually the cap was put back on. It meant pinpointing the places where new hackney ranks needed to be and arguing with the council that it was their responsibility to provide these ranks for the public. We went from 40 ranks to over 180 and it took time. We restructured the fares, taking into consideration that what was good for the night driver wasn't necessarily good for the day driver. It takes planning,

The structuring of meter fares comes down to the geography of your area and your local knowledge, but at the same time you do not dramatically outprice yourself from your competition. You advertise the advantages of using a hackney over a 4 seater vehicle i.e. wheelchair accessible, disability friendly (blind and deaf) and the extra passengers you can carry, including mums with prams.

It never finishes. The trade has to work as one, and has to continuously be part of the infrastructure of were you are.

p.s. Liverpool took their eye off the ball. Each year they would put in for a fare rise until the gap between Sefton p.h. and them was huge. It was easy for the private hire to walk into Liverpool and take their work.

well spleens well and truly vented here then and no agreement on the right course of action and you never will cabbies by their nature cannot be united they all have their own solution to the problem the council are the only people in a position to solve anything and probably won't be bothered. personally I would suggest inviting the TV and press down on a mid November night with loads of cabs sitting around and nobody struggling to get a cab home and then as part of their "investigation" invite them to visit a couple of drivers and their families struggling to make ends meet then get them to ask the council why they don't think it appropriate that cabbies earn a living wage

Used correctly the media is mighty tool
