Taxi firm owner calls for more repair time for cab drivers after 'unfair' spot checks on vehicles

Shabaz Ahmed, owner of Marsh Cars say current system is "harsh and unfair" and drivers faced a 'race against time' to fix their cars

The owner of Marsh Cars has called for more sensitivity to be used when spot checks are made on vehicles.

Shabaz Ahmed spoke out after Kirklees Council vehicle licensing inspectors in association with West Yorkshire Police carried out dozens of checks on vehicles during four hours on Friday night.

While saying he completely agreed that unsafe vehicles were taken off the road he said the mainly self-employed drivers faced a race against time to fix their vehicles as they get only an hour’s grace to complete the work.

He said: “Even the AA might struggle to get there in that time scale. I think it’s a bit unfair.”

The spot checks were carried out on Friday on the ring road close to the multi-storey car park at Queensgate between 6pm and 10pm. Drivers face an £80 fine if they cannot remedy the fault within the hour.

Five out of 24 licensed taxis were hauled off the road after dangerous defects were found.

And another taxi driver, Amjad Nadeem, whose vehicle passed the inspection without difficulty, said: “We are not running away from this. The public have to have confidence in the safety of our vehicles, they are our livelihood.”

If they looked after their motors they wouldn't need more time.

How are the spot checks unfair? Because those whose cars have no faults are allowed to carry on?

He is very silly for not carrying basic spares. I checked my lights prior to one shift (I'd changed a bulb at home), by the time I had done part of my shift we had a spot check, and another bulb had gone! Because I carried spares I was allowed to change it, all okay. I think sometimes they just want drivers to show a bit of willing to do the right thing.
