West Berkshire Taxi Drivers In Fight To Tackle Child Sexual Exploitation


West Berkshire taxi drivers could be key in tackling child sexual exploitation, after a consultation has started on proposed Mandatory Training to spot warning signs.

A proposal for a new policy requiring all West Berkshire taxi drivers to attend mandatory child sexual exploitation training follows recommendations from Thames Valley Police and debate at the Licensing Committee held on the 22 September 2015.

Jeff Beck, Chairman of West Berkshire’s Licensing Committee said: "Taxi drivers have a duty to provide the best service to all of their passengers and the training will provide the information they need to do that. They are also in a fairly unique position with regards to their likelihood of spotting situations that may involve child sexual exploitation. The new policy, if taken up, would go a long way to ensuring that people continue to travel safely."

Under these proposals, new and renewed licenses for drivers would not be issued unless the training has been completed.

The cost of the training would be covered by drivers and is expected to be approximately £50 per driver.
