In six weeks there have been 95 complaints made about Cardiff taxi drivers 'refusing short fares'

Cardiff council has received 95 complaints about taxis in the last six weeks

There have been almost 100 complaints about Cardiff taxi drivers reportedly refusing to take short fares in the past six weeks.

During a meeting of Cardiff councillors the chairwoman of the council’s licensing committee, Jacqueline Parry, told colleagues the level of complaints – 95 – was “unprecedented”.

Councillors were told the number of visitors coming to the capital for the Rugby World Cup would have had an impact.

Coun Parry said: “We are collating all the information and then we’ll be looking to see if there are any breaches.

'We will come down on drivers strongly'

“If there are we will be coming down on drivers strongly.”

The issue came to light after three alleged sexual assaults in the city.

Police and other authorities told women, especially students, not to walk around the city on their own and to take taxis.

But many complained that drivers were refusing to take fares which drivers deemed “too short”.

In response Cardiff council said they would launch a “mystery shopper” crackdown with officers checking drivers were meeting the rules.

The results of those tests are not yet available.

'Drivers are ambassadors to the city'

While taxi groups said the majority of their staff adhered to the rules other drivers said they too were fed up of colleagues refusing fares.

Drivers said they had seen colleagues with hackney licences refusing to take short journeys.

Coun Parry has previously described taxi drivers as “ambassadors to our city”.

The council have urged those who feel they have been turned down for a journey to take details including the driver or cab number and note where and when it happened and email licensing@cardiff.gov.uk.

They also advised to take a picture of the driver’s identification displayed in the taxi.

Someone is going to get bitch whipped by the council.

I hope that any drivers who were refusing fares also noted what these journeys were, why they refused them and also took a photo of the person they refused.

If you invite criticism as the Council has, then you will get it. The drivers now experience "Hate Crime/harassment" at busy times, instigated by the Council - well done the Council.

It is ironic: The Council have just had "You do not have to suffer hate at work/wherever" basically an anti "Hate Crime" week! In my opinion they are guilty of creating/causing "Hate Crime" against innocent drivers, who now have every Tom, Richard and Harry thrusting their mobile cams into cabs threatening drivers with loss of livelihood...even if they are booked.

The figure is more like 74,000 in the ground and another 30/40 thousand in the pubs/clubs watching the games. Arriva as ever (been going on for years) could not cope, and the bus drivers were on a few occasions on strike. Then we had the sex assaults from two guys who do not originate from this country! The bottom line being; the frustrations and excuses were, and are, being taken out on the drivers.It has always been problematic when 74,000 pour out of the ground, and say 45,000 all want to go home at the same time, it is a nightmare from a traffic point of view and the same for the dull people who know that this is scenario is going to be one big f c u k up for the first couple of hours.

Of course (refusals) go on as it does in most areas. You then get the lemming brigade writing in, pulling on the heart strings that they are afraid of being sexually attacked (two people already charged), (using not getting a taxi as an excuse) to vilify the innocent drivers who can get them home. You have honest drivers who have taken bookings now experiencing harassment/hate crime courtesy of the Council.

We now have every p r ! ck out there shoving cams into the vehicles.

My sympathy is with you and other drivers on rugby days. I had a pickup at 10pm at the marriot hotel the other saturday, just after the france new zealand game finished. Was carnage with gridlocked traffic as 90 odd thousand tried to leave cardiff at the same time. Would have been quicker to walk out of the city centre and was pretty much bumper to bumper all the way back down the m4. You can see why the drivers want to leave the city at times like that, even getting back to the rank could take an hour.
