Plymouth taxi driver 'threatened and racially abused' by passengers caught on CCTVA ROMANIAN taxi driver says he was threatened and racially abused by a group of drunken passengers who stole his phone, smashed his mirror and tried to climb inside his cab.
Alin Turi, aged 38, picked up six people from outside Crash Manor in Union Street at about 3.40am on Saturday.
Mr Turi says when they reached their destination, Salisbury Road in St Judes, the group became verbally aggressive.
“They started to swear at me,” he said.
“One of them told me if I didn’t stop he was going to kill me.
“I said ‘I have done nothing wrong’, but one of them said ‘He’s a black taxi driver, he doesn’t speak English, he doesn’t know his way around Plymouth’.
“I said ‘I am not black, I am speaking English and I know exactly my way around Plymouth’.”
Mr Turi stopped his cab on the junction of Salisbury Road and Pentyre Terrace.
“I opened the door, they got out and I opened my window,” he said.
“One girl said ‘Thank you for a free ride’. I said ‘It’s not a free ride, you need to pay me’.
“They started swearing at me again, one guy came to my window, put his hand inside, took my phone and started running.
“A girl came and smashed my side mirror as well. I tried to follow them in my car but I lost them.”
Mr Turi caught the group on his in-car CCTV, which is being analysed by police.
“I was terrified as there were six of them and I was just myself,” he said.
“They tried to get inside my car as well, luckily I was able to lock my doors.
“The police came very quickly, in a couple of minutes, but they could not find them.”
Mr Turi used an app to trace his iPhone, which was still registered as being in Salisbury Road later on Saturday.
A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Officers attended the scene but were unable to locate the suspects.”
