Driver 'distraught' over warnings of suspicious taxi firm in Canterbury

A taxi firm has defended itself after a student spread a warning about suspicious taxis.

According to the student posting on the Canterbury Christ Church student union Facebook page, she was met by a taxi firm that she had not called.

The driver knew her name and where she wanted to go, but the driver's business cards mentioned a company that she could not find online.

When she asked why a different service had turned up, the driver explained that the request had been forwarded on to him as the other company was not working that night.

This student refused to get in to the taxi, but she took to Facebook concerned that other people might be more trusting.

However, a driver at United Taxis has explained that if there are no other drivers available, they call out city council approved drivers.

He said: "When we don't have taxi drivers available, we get other taxi drivers to do our work. The driver that this happened to was called by Canterbury City Council. They're trying to get in touch with Canterbury Christ Church University.

"The driver had his badge on, he's been doing the job for 25 years and to be honest he's a bit distraught by it.

"As a policy, if we haven't got a driver we get licenced drivers to cover our work. It's something we have done for years, we've never had anything like this. It was a bit of a shock.

"But thank God the council was quite understanding about it. As far as I know it's all in good hands. Hopefully they'll bring down the Facebook post."

sounds like all taxis need to give this punter a wide birth you probably only have to say hello to her and she will accuse you of impropriety

She seems like a sensible, if not slightly over cautious, young lady. Perhaps the company she booked with would do well to let passengers know that the job may be subcontracted to another reputable company in the event that they don't have a driver available. I guess there isn't much chance of her getting into a touts vehicle. There is also the possibility that she's had a bad experience getting in to the wrong vehicle.
