World War 3 anyone?

Turkey Shoots Down Russian Jet Near Border

The Kremlin says the downing of the warplane for allegedly violating Turkey's airspace is a "very serious incident".

A Russian jet has been shot down after allegedly violating Turkish airspace near the Syrian border.

The pilot was warned 10 times before being shot down by two Turkish F16 jets, according to the country's military.

An official said two planes approached the Turkish border and were warned before one of them containing two pilots was shot down, adding their information shows Turkish airspace was repeatedly violated.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman described it as a "very serious incident", but said it was too early to draw conclusions.

The Russian defence ministry said in a statement the Sukhoi Su-24 jet did not violate Turkish airspace and added it was downed by artillery fire.

The Turkish military said the plane entered Turkish airspace over the town of Yayladagi in Hatay province.

It went down in an area known by Turks as "Turkmen Mountain" in northern Syria near the Turkish border, private broadcaster Haberturk said.

The Russian defence ministry also said that according to preliminary data the pilots on board managed to parachute out, but their fate is unclear.

TV footage broadcast in Turkey showed a plane going down in flames in a woodland area, with a long plume of smoke trailing behind it.

Separate footage from the country's Anadolu Agency showed two pilots ejecting from the jet before it crashed.

Video sent to Reuters by a Syrian rebel group claims to show a Russian pilot immobile on the ground, and an official from the group has told the news agency he is dead.

One of the pilots is in the hands of Turkmen forces in northern Syria, CCN Turk said, citing local sources.

Turkey's Dogan news agency said two Russian military helicopters are searching for the pilots.

A statement from Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu's office said the leader has spoken with Turkey's military chief and foreign ministry about the incident.

The region the plane went down in has been the subject of a Syrian government offensive in recent days under the cover of Russian airstrikes.

Before the incident involving the Russian jet, Turkey had called for a UN Security Council meeting to discuss attacks on Turkmens in Syria.

Around 1,700 people have fled the mountainous area to the Turkish border in the last three days, a Turkish official said on Monday.

Last week Ankara summoned the Russian ambassador to protest against the bombing of the villages by Moscow, saying Russia's actions did not "constitute a fight against terrorism" but the bombing of civilians.

Ambassador Andrey Karlov was warned that Russian operations could lead to serious consequences, Turkey's Foreign Ministry said.

Turkey has traditionally expressed solidarity with Syrian Turkmens, who are Syrians of Turkish descent.

My Humanity and past tolerance towards these Migrants who are over running our country is fast disappearing and I'm sure that holds true for more and more people every day.

It's nice to be seen as a Humanitarian. ..but not at any cost, These Medieval Fundamentalists will turn our tolerance into the very weapon of our own destruction.

The usual game is checking response times.

Sounds like he was arrogant enough to assume turkey would do nothing. It's his own fault he'd have done the same if it was a turkish plane violating his airspace personally i think Turkey did the right thing

Beats me how Turkey can warn a Russian Jet 10 times within the 17 Seconds it was In Turkish airspace..nah, that President Erdogan has been Itching for an excuse to further drive a Wedge between the West and Russia in order to propel his country from that of a Secular one to that of an Islamist state sooner rather than later.

And what kind of Savages shoot at Pilots in Parachutes who pose no threat at all..

Nato should boot out Turkey and keep Nato's sphere of influence within it's natural eastern boundary of Europe, and the EU should keep Turkey out of the EU as well as it's more Eur-asion/Asian than it ever is European both ethnically and religiously.

I can sympathise with the Russians on this one...a stab in the back indeed on a plane that proved no real threat that inadvertently crossed the tip of Turkeys border in it's pursuit of Terrorist bases within Syria.

I agree with most of the above, but! The Russians as already mentioned in an earlier post, have been provoking Nations around the world. They have been putting their Aircraft, fighter planes, submarines in various nations skies/waters etc for quite some time. The bottom line being; if you keep walking uninvited around your neighbours property, openly or in stealth mode, then sooner or later you will get a slap........some slaps being harder than others.

I would be very surprised if either side is telling the whole truth but I'm sure the aircraft was warned before it crossed into Turkish airspace. Meanwhile the region is getting more and more divided into various militias backed by governments all over the world a great time to be an arms manufacturer

They'd have to be fast talkers to warn them 10 times in 17 seconds.

Typical Turks, effin liars.

The warnings may have been earlier than the 17 seconds to warn that they were about to enter Turkish airspace.

I would doubt that it would happen verbally. The amount of times that the Russians are transgressing into other waters/airspace you would have to be a universal linguist to understand all languages. I would imagine that it would take form in some sort of communication/signalling. Also take on board that these war planes will/would be travelling well in excess of 600+ miles per hour, as such it is no good claiming that they were 1 kilometer inside - that is cutting it fine to say the least. The Russians need to be more responsible........instead of using intimidation.
