Bank offers supper after £40k error

Bank bosses who offered a taxi boss a bar supper after he handed back £40,000 given to him in error have said they would make a donation to his chosen charity instead. Derek Smith was left stunned and disappointed at the tight-fisted attitude of staff at the Royal Bank of Scotland who offered him the cheap meal after he reappeared with the money which they thought had vanished forever.

The bank at Aberdeen's Queen's Cross launched an internal inquiry after it mistakenly gave Mr Smith £100,000 instead of £60,000 and could not figure out where the money had gone. Mr Smith, 50, who runs his own taxi and coach company in the city, said: "I was putting the money in the office safe when I discovered they had given me £40,000 too much. When I went back to the bank, the woman said she couldn't believe I was coming back in with the cash because they had written it off as gone.

"They then said that I should be rewarded and asked if they could buy me a bar supper. I said 'I am not that hungry' and added that if I wanted a decent meal I would have kept the £40,000. "I thought what they were offering was a ridiculous idea given that I had come back in with that amount of money and suggested that they donate money to a diabetics charity instead."

A Royal Bank of Scotland spokesman said: "We are grateful for Mr Smith's honesty in returning the money and we do, of course, apologise for the mistake which arose as a result of human error. "In situations such as these we always discuss an appropriate level of compensation and we are doing this with Mr Smith regarding a donation to a charity of his choice."

Mr Smith said: "Looking back, I did get a shock when I opened the envelopes with the money and realised how much was there. "But we did have a bit of a laugh about it in the office before I took it back."
