Hi,
I am a first year journalism student writing a feature article about London taxis and the 'scrapping' of the Knowledge and the impact Uber has had on the taxi trade. I would be very grateful if any london cabbies could possibly let me know their views on the topic? My email is mollie.zsigo@city.ac.uk.
Many thanks!!!!!

Uber is having an effect on the black cab trade, but the biggest losers by far are the owners of the large minicab firms that are losing 1000s of drivers to Uber.

Uber might not be the perfect firm, but minicab drivers have a choice to work with Uber or to not work with Uber. It appears 1000s want to work with them.

The knowledge is something the black cab trade will defend with everything they have, because it's protected their earnings for many many years. Now whilst I understand that view, I'm not sure a memory test that takes three years (on average) to pass is what is required in 2015.

How would issues be debated? How much time would each individual voter need to spend listening to the arguments for and against an issue? There is absolutely nothing to stop you from getting involved yourself via you local party. If you can get enough support you could even get selected to stand for election yourself. That is what I did this year.

There are many ways to debate issues..They can be local or national and anyone should be able to contribute via twitter, skype, watsapp tv or other new ideas...Time can be allocated depending on the seriousness of the te being discussed...A lo of debates will be better served by ''joe public''..e.g. immigration, irag war, bombing syria...and corruption would be totally out...no gold plated pensions to pay either and people would feel much more satisfied...if things went wrong they couldn't blame anyone but themselves and learn from experience....once politicians decide to give up their jobs we can scrap the ''knowledge'' and allow anyone with a driving licence and satnav to ferry passengers !

You are clearly deluded. All you would get is a slanging match. You would end up with thousands of people all insisting that they are right and wanting to have their say. The way it works at the moment means that you can always lobby your MP to put your own views over.

Oh look...... Its the 4 yearly 'scrap the knowledge' speech from yet another nauseating local government politician.

This time its from Dick Tracey, a rather obnoxious individual who seems to have a fixation with doing right, without any knowledge of the industry he's trying to 'help'. He tried the same thing with London's fire service with all sorts of weird and interesting ideas which would basically have taken them back to 1890, now its our turn.

The Tories are a minority in London, and after next year I suspect, and predict they'll be even less of an influence. They comprise of the usual white, plumb in the mouth, 60 - 70 year old men with pot belly's, big bank accounts, and zero interest in working Londoners, the usual ruling class and co brigade.

I gather Boris, plus the other main Mayoral candidates are quite happy the way the knowledge functions, and provides the most highly qualified taxi drivers in the world.

To sum it up, who gives a 'edited by admin' what Tracey and his Richmond Conservative Club cronies think.

They can use Uber ..... that's if the driver can find them or communicate with them.

Yes. 'we don't have to work for the spivs anymore' they cried in jubilation!

3 years later they now work for the biggest tax avoiding spiv on the planet for 98p a mile. Quality!!

That worked.

Not any more they don't, we've witnessed first hand what Boris has done to London and the trade.

I'm sure he'll still have the Daily Mail reading drivers .... but I'd say he's changed a lot of cabbies politics.

Delighted, but I would hope for many of us 2015 is better than 2014.

My point is it could have been even better if Uber didn't exist.

Indeed.

Personally I think outside of London Uber will never take over.

They might do a bit here and there, and good luck to them, but they will never have as big a market share outside of London as they do inside of London.
