Scunthorpe cabbies angry over 100% licence fee rise

CABBIES in Scunthorpe are to raise concerns with North Lincolnshire Council over a proposed 100 per cent-plus hike in their licence fees.

At present cabbies who operate private hire cars pay £72 a year for their licences.

But the cash-strapped local authority insists the present fee is not enough to cover the processing costs.

The council is proposing to introduce a phased in programme to recover the full costs.

From January 15 the fee for an annual licence would rise to £150; in 2017 the level would again increase to £250. And there would be a further £100 hike in 2018.

Alternatively, cabbies can pay for a five-year licence at the knock-down rate of £1,015 - or £203 per annum.

John Fleming, secretary of the 180-strong Scunthorpe District Taxi Association, said at the meeting with the local authority he would be seeking detailed justification for the price hikes.

The council plans to introduce the new fees from January 15 if no objections have been received.
