TT you only need to post once

it was mentioned on the news that they might pay farmers to allow their land to be flooded. Finally a common sense solution farm land is the ideal flood reservoir as long as the farmers are compensated adequately a very good and possibly more cost effective partial solution to the problem

I thought the farmers already got a good subsidy from the EU NOT to grow anything on their land. Now you want to pay them to get god to [edited by admin] on it as well.

In many areas they already do get paid for flooding. That is how it is done here. They have built a flood defense accross our river about 3 miles from town so that when it rains heavy they can shut most of the flow of water off and flood the farmland. When the water level starts to drop they can open the sluices and let the water go in a controlled way. Since this has been done we have not had any flooding in the town. However we have not had the rain the same as the north yet.
