If a punter aknowledges you then surely most of us would then simply put the meter on, most customers accept this as the norm, on the odd occasion they complain then simply wear it and restart the meter, punters in boozers who phone a cab thinking it could take 10 or so minutes and then the cab turns up in 2 minutes, is finishing their drink really too much for some cabbies to wait, it's all about reliability and service, waiting an extra couple of minutes ain't going to bankrupt anyone.

We are not allowed to put the meter on until the punter is in the car. If you wait 10 minutes for that customer you will probably be 10 minutes late for the next one. Where is your reliability then? if the customer orders the taxi for "now" then they should be ready to get in the car when you arrive. If you always wait for them then they will expect you to always wait. If you leave after a couple of minutes, they will soon learn to be ready.

I agree with the above ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

But on another note if you pulled up for an 11pm booking and they were 10 minutes late would you let them have that time for free without engaging the meter? If I get to an 11pm booking they get two minutes then the meter gets engaged.

Quoted price goes out of the window, it's for a T1 booking it's not T1 anymore. If you were running late then it has to be a T1 booking.

I've never had the pleasure to work from a base or a meter, being rural private hire. all these odd 2 minutes to wait add up to a lot of unpaid hours during the course of a year, as does the wasted mileage on no shows..

No show=no further bookings taken from them.

I'm starting to keep a log of the times spent on each job, so far it's working out roughly at ;

Time from getting job to arriving at pickup = 4 minutes
Time from arriving to loading passenger = 4 minutes
Time to unload at destination = 3 minutes.

Only averages at the moment as I've only checked a couple of days here and there, once I check a full week it'll be clearer.
But it looks like it takes 8 minutes from passenger phoning to actually getting in car - just to do a 3 minute 1 mile job (majority of our jobs go a mile or less :sad: )

Shockingly if I do an 8 hour shift only about 1.5 hours is with a passenger on board/meter running ! :shock:

Am I only doing 1.5 hours work a day, or is it 6.5 hours unpaid work ? :wink:

Last night skewed the stats, most passengers loaded in less than two minutes and went a couple of miles.

I'm counting that as a "driving time", my best score is 11h59m in twelve hrs shift (town jobs only no distance) the worst is 0h45m in twelve hrs shift (1/1/2015) :roll:

Hang on, are you saying that you once had passengers in your car for 11 hours 59 mins of a 12 hour shift?

"driving time" grandad means when I'm driving, I've stopped engine for 1 min in 12 hrs taking over 40 jobs at that time. working time it's not only when you carry passenger, I count it from time when booking appears on my screen then driving to pickup point (because I'm busy already and sometimes it takes longer). in that particular example I had job after job so I had no time to stop engine :roll:

12 hours without a break!!! most people would think that rather dangerous.
