Would it not be right to point out to the LA/Council that their tariff is tantamount to slavery of which is banned in the U.K (allegedly) by forcing people/drivers to work without pay. I know it sounds a bit silly, but if you are working from say supermarkets picking up shoppers, then the loading/unloading could easily add up to a few hours per week loss of time, being forced upon the drivers

but you arent FORCED to do it

My lad got £63 yesterday, 1pm-2am

in TIPS.....help the passenger, you wont need the clock

I might be wrong.......but I think that rules for hackney drivers have to be byelaws..look at page 26 and not just a condition of licence.

You are not wrong Mr T.

However many councils now get around that by having dual licenses.

Of course you are forced to do it by virtue of unfair conditions. It must be a right laugh when the 15/16/17 plastic bag shopper turns up to watch YOU load it all up, and then the other end watch you do the reverse.......and then wait for the 10p change.

explain who forces you to do it exactly?

customer service gets rewards, i have a regular who has a £4 ride home, walk her bags in and get £7.50...

maybe its your attitude thats wrong, not the fare structure

Well what can I say........one passenger out of how many ha ha ha that does the right thing. The logic is fundamentally correct, the practicality is impractical.

The subject of when to start the meter comes up regularly on here. Our council say that it is when the customer is seated and ready to go.
The following is from the Government best practice guidlines and it seems to back up this view.

Annex B
TAXI AND PRIVATE HIRE VEHICLE LICENSING: BEST PRACTICE GUIDANCE
Notice for taxi passengers - what you can expect from the taxi trade and what the
taxi trade can expect from you
The driver will:
 Drive with due care and courtesy towards the passenger and other road
users.
 Use the meter within the licensed area, unless the passenger has agreed to
hire by time.
 If using the meter, not start the meter until the passenger is seated in the
vehicle.
 If travelling outside the licensed area, agree the fare in advance. If no fare
has been negotiated in advance for a journey going beyond the licensing
area then the driver must adhere to the meter.
 Take the most time-efficient route, bearing in mind likely traffic problems and
known diversions, and explain any diversion from the most direct route.

Ask your council if this Our council say that it is when the customer is seated and ready to go. is a by-law.....if not non enforceable...

But that is "Quoted Jobs" not "Metered".

Different altogether.

I think the workings of the cab would come under vehicle rules ( mainly 1976 act), not driver rules (1847 act).

No! Just be consistent with your argument!!!! It would seem that you are cherry picking fares/illustrations to suit your argument, unfortunately not a realistic 24/7 illustration of fares that anyone would get.

Ok, overall view? fixed local = £4 account for 60% of jobs, 10% involve me handling bags, half of those resut in a tip between 50p and £1, however 25% are nil tips and 25% are better tips, not all tips are for handling baggage

30 x £4 fares a day when half hand over a fiver and say keep the quid means a result when many fares resut in a tip for NOT handling bags...

Son took £180 saturday and got £63 in tips, work that one out

I think our council includes this in it's conditions of license pamphlet that it issues to drivers not re read mine for over 5 years though since the last one was sent. If your council issues something similar it might be worth checking out
