I can't find the definitive answer anywhere to this so hopefully you gentlemen can enlighten me :-

On reading the DVSA 'Know Your Traffic Signs' book it says a taxi can pick up/drop off on a 'Red Route', ie double red lines - however on a 'Clearway', ie the red cross on a blue background, it doesn't say anything about taxis. So are we prohibited from picking up/droping off on a Clearway but not on a Red Route ?

This is the Clearway sign I am meaning :-

(note this is not the same as 'Urban Clearway' where picking up/setting down passengers is allowed for ANY vehicle)

Thank you

Red routes as you call them are No Stopping/waiting/loading at any time, never seen a sign on any of them with exemptions

In modern "Spy Britain" wherever there's Double Red lines you'll can bet there.s a Camera somewhere watching it with the sole intent of raising revenue for whoever it was that put it there..for a mere £60 fine you'll can find out for yourself if your allowed to Drop off or Pickup on Double reds....

Save yer money..you can't

Yes and for you to get a comprehensive response YOU need to identify for what area you need the information and whether your PH or Hack

London has specific legislation

I am in Dundee, Scotland and there are no Red Routes in my town. HOWEVER my question is not about Red Routes, that was only for comparison purposes. I have maybe not been very clear in stating my original question - so here it is more clearly :-

(a) Can a taxi (hackney license) pick/drop off on a 'Clearway' (ie not an 'Urban Clearway')

(b) If not, then why not ?

With the Red Route the answer to (a) is actually YES. If you look at 'Know Your Traffic Signs' book by the DVSA online, page 56, it says :-

'On red routes, yellow waiting restriction lines are replaced by red lines that mean no stopping for any purpose, not even to pick up or set down passengers, other than by a licensed taxi.'

You can see this at :- (go to page 56)
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... 191955.pdf

And if you go to page 55 it describes the rules for 'Clearway' - but what I can't understand is why is there no mention of taxis ?

How come they would let a taxi pick up/drop off on a Red Route but not on a Clearway ?

Thanks if anyone knows

(I was once booked for picking up on a Clearway - but I heard nothing further from it - I am wondering if the officer was in the wrong ?)

Can you carry TWO "assistance" dogs with 2 adult passengers, do both humans have to be disabled?

No Leon! Of course I am in a Union!! ie Unite, who are currently putting me through the SVQ Taxi Driving course, one reason all these questions are occurring to me right now. I'll have a few more probably - I hope nobody'll mind me asking on here what the other drivers think.

Its a funny one with the Clearway because a main thoroughfare in my town is designated a Clearway but hundreds of people flag you down on it every Saturday night when its busy - but its hard to get a definitive answer as to the legal position on this.
