Scots lottery winner swaps taxi for new Audi

A taxi driver has swapped his old cab for a top-of-the-range Audi after scooping £1 million on the lottery.

Arthur Howard, 74, from East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, has taken his last fare after the EuroMillions win which saw him trade in his Vauxhall for a brand-new white Audi.

The prize comes with an all-expenses paid trip to Dubai, where the couple plan to spend their 57th wedding anniversary in November.

They will not move house but instead extend their current home, where their four children and nine grandchildren are regular visitors.

Mr Howard said he did not have to think twice about giving up his job.

He added: “I was getting too old. All my mates are taxi drivers, I’m going to miss my mates. Although I’ll keep in touch with them.”

The grandfather, who used the change he kept in his cab to purchase the winning ticket from his local One-O-One store, had to phone the lottery claim line twice before believing that he had become a millionaire.

The first time he told the call handler he would have to hang up and call her back because he was in shock.

He said: “It might start to feel real on Friday when I pick up my brand new Audi.

“It was the first thing I went to buy as soon as I found out and on my way back I picked up my wife from Marks and Spencer.

“She was worried because her pound was stuck in the trolley but she doesn’t need to worry about the odd pound now.”

Tearful Mrs Howard said she does not know what she will buy first but is glad her children will not have to worry about them any more.

She said: “They worried about us getting older. I saw their faces and I thought, ‘we can make things happen for them as well’.”

Mr Howard said: “It’s a life-changing sum for a lot of people. I hope it doesn’t change me much - I don’t want to become a pain in the butt.”

The EuroMillions Mega Friday winner was one of seven players who each banked £1 million and break to Dubai in the EuroMillions draw on January 29.

I hope that you have a pension/income other than your state pension sorted out............otherwise you could very well become (a supposed) greedy fooker :!:

No matter as to how much you might try to provide for retirement, life can throw something at you that scuppers your plans. It is not necessarily greed Or as you put it "taking money off of the young ones" - have you thought of the fact that he may out of necessity be doing the manly thing of providing? It is not always what it might seem.

well i actually agree with some of those comments tbf, although some are just pure greedy, i worked a ph, office , where 1 bloke used to work off shore, he was a head engineer & was on a fortune ( he told us ) yet when he was home used to hire a car & work every hour god sent in his 2 weeks off , another aged about 68/70 got a huge windfall when his mother died & a massive house left to him in the will, so took time off & i bumped in to him in tescos & asked what he was up to, he said "just enjoying myself", sold the house , banked the cash & bought a 10 plate octavia, working the office now  ( & so i herd being a awkward tvat because he has back up cash , refusing jobs etc ) taking money off other younger drivers when work is scarce atm anyway , i don't bother with him now tbh , greedy fooker

1 Guy down my way is 74ish works around 60-70 hours a week
including late weekend nights/mornings. He has a couple of pensions
and owns 5 houses which he rents out ,not the type to take out big dept.
He is rolling it in and there is no sign of him giving up.

No life what so ever.
