Just looked through my Kindle and can heartily reccommend the following...

Narrow Dog To Carcassonne by Terry Darlington.
Retired couple sail a narrow boat to France. Stars a whippet called Jim. Very warm and funny
with a wonderfully flowing style.

How Katie Pulled Boris by Keith Mashiter
Katie is a large motorhome, no comment re Boris on this site. Light, funny, and easy to dip into
between jobs.

The Psychopath Test by Jon Ronson.
Well worth reading. Again, light enough for short bursts of dippng into, but deep enough to keep
you coming back. Explains a lot about our Betters and those who strive to climb the greasy poll!

Programmed To Kill by David McGowan
Unpleasant tale of CIA shinnanigins with serial killers, MK Ultra etc.
Placed here as non fction, but who knows?

The Internet Is A Playground by David Thorne.
I defy anyone with a pulse not to laugh out loud when reading this. I'm sure that Thorne would make a terrible
friend or neighbour, but at this distance he's great! Google his site, search 27/b and that should take you there.

The Road To Little Dribbling by Bill Bryson. Follow on to Notes From A Small Island. Easy reading, affectionate look at
us from the standpoint of a visitor to these shores.

With regard to fiction....

Anything by Terry Pratchett. He was a brilliant satirist and his books have kept me sane on many
a miserable mid week night.

Cold Granite by Stuart Macbride. Aberdeen based cop who seems to be kept busy. There's a whole
series of these Logan Macrea novels, this is the first, and they're all bl00dy good reads.

Anything by Val McDermid. Best to start by going on her site first and getting them in sequnce.
The Tony Hill ones are excellent, far superior to the TV series.

Anything by Tom Sharpe. Slightly subversive, but funny. Start with Wilt.

Finally, 2 books that everyone should read...
The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist as mentioned by a previous poster. Shows what cap wringing numpties
many of us are in this trade.
Small Is Beautifull, Economics As If People Mattered by E F Schumacher.
But of course we don't!

Hope this is of some use.

I second the Jack Reacher series as a brilliant read. Also, for an interesting, and sometimes amusing, factual account of the Vietnam conflict, a book called Chickenhawk by Robert Mason.

The Ladybird Book of Sheds. Highly amusing for a quick read between jobs.
