Hello, first time posting so not sure if this is the right place, apologies if not.

I have a settle car, £200 a week, and last week had a minor prang, going into the back of a car who herself had rear ended someone. Some damage to the grille, some to the bonnet.

My quandary is this. The settle co pay have got vein me a bill of £1000 for excess liability to the car and its damages. I blindly accepted but have since began to wonder how the figure was arrived at. They'll repair it themselves and it won't cost that much (15 plate Focus Estate).

am I being paranoid? Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks.

Not Highway services in Nottingham is it ? This is quite common in the trade as these cars are normally on fleet policies which are quite prone to cancellation if too many prangs so companies do this to avoid reporting minor accidents to the insurance thus avoiding premium hikes and possible loss of insurance

Well! I am thinking that unless this was pointed out in writing prior to the driver taking on the car - then they cannot charge him.
Whilst it may be a practice to keep insurance premiums down.....then what is the point of a driver being told he is in an insured vehicle, therefore covering his obligations.

I doubt very much if you are....you cannot trust many of them these days, probably at least one on here....but not many.

You need to take pics of the damage (quickly), and to then get a general feel of costs from any garage that you trust.

P.S. £1000 is a nice round figure, a bit like a solicitors bill always rounded up to a nice BIG figure - I would definitely get it checked out.

Be very careful in what you do in this case,if you were to blame for rear ending vehicle in front albeit you claim it was minor, the person who you bumped can make a claim for damage to their vehicle and also possibly for personal injury, the 1st vehicle may possibly make a claim for damage attributed to you rear ending the 2nd vehicle.

Let the insurance companies sort this out ,I would not accept any liability to pay for damage out of my personal finances, read any paperwork you were given when you agreed to rent this vehicle as any exclusions regarding insurance must be given in writing.

Finally seek professional legal advice from the likes of James Button(solicitor)

£1000 is light, i had a slight scrape, bonnet, grille, bumper, wing......£2200

plus, whoever you hit wil claim £6000 for whiplash.........per person

suck it up and ask to pay over 3 months by added settle

in my last concertina, each claim is start/finish at the front of a vehicle, unless i can prove i was pushed forward, which is difficult, you always claim of whoever rear ends you

Thanks chaps, much obliged.

It just seems an arbitrary amount and I hadn't been told that this would occur should I ever have a knock. I don't want to go in there on the offensive if it's not unreasonable. It's not my insurance after all, and I was there when it was phone in. I just don't understand how it works, as I've only been doing it a few months and have never crashed before.

I perfectly understand I have to pay for damages to the car, but the sheet says "£1000 fault damages liability for DG15 XXXX"
and given they're fixing the damage themselves, it seems excessive. Don't know whether to put it down to experience or challn ge it and possibly make my arrangement tense.

First world problems and that.

As far as I am concerned, if I rent a vehicle with insurance then the insurance should cover any damage. The most I would think I would be liable to would be the policy excess. Have you seen the insurance policy? There is a company here that only have 3rd party insurance on their vehicles yet they charge drivers £4.20 per shift for insurance. if they have an accident they get hit for the full cost of repairs to the company vehicle. All wrong in my opinion.

Not sure anyone blindly accepts anything, you either know about it or you don't.

If you don't then £1000 is completely unreasonable.

Problem you have is the insurance has a £1000 excess, and is it fair for the owner to pay the £1000 when he has done nothing wrong?

I would speak to the other lads in the local trade, see if they are in the same boat.

Or get it fixed yourself.

As an aside..........£1000 as an excess seems awfully high! Is that the going rate for fleet?

My own gut feeling is that this company is OTT re claiming off of the driver.

Our fleet excess is £350.00 which doubles to £700 if we don't report an accident witjhin a certain time. our minibus excess is £1,000.

Thanks again, all. One last thing, though. It's not excess on their insurance, it's fault damages liability for the vehicle, no mention of insurance excess anywhere at any point. It feels excessive and arbitrary.
